UNI Museum Collection to Move to New Location

In order to ensure the long-term viability of the UNI Museum’s artifacts, the university is exploring a more suitable location for its collection.

The UNI collection is in danger of extensive damage if it stays in its current building, which was not designed as a museum and needs major repairs and renovation too expensive to undertake.  The artifacts also require a building with appropriate controls to monitor and maintain environmental conditions.

The goal is to move the collection to a location that will maintain the collection's identity and continue to provide research, teaching and outreach opportunities for UNI and the larger community.

A transition team, comprised of faculty, staff, students and community members will be appointed. During the planning, the museum will continue to operate as usual. While the building will eventually close and artifacts will be exhibited on and off campus, the collection will remain under the ownership of the University of Northern Iowa.
