Regents Approval of Academic Program Changes

March 23, 2012

Regents approve plans to close or restructure selected academic programs

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa met yesterday. Two key agenda items related to UNI included were an update on the Malcolm Price Laboratory School and our request to close or restructure selected academic programs with low completion rates.

College of Education Dean Dwight Watson and I provided an update to the Board about Malcolm Price Laboratory School. Ten transition teams have been established. My remarks and the list of teams and their members can be found at http://www.uni.edu/program-changes/transition-update-report-board-regents. I stressed that we are working with local school systems to place MPLS students next fall; establish expanded opportunities for our teacher-education students to have field experiences in local schools districts; and we are developing plans for new ways to conduct research and development state-wide. We have assembled dedicated and innovative teams to lead this transition. We look forward to following their progress.

Since our original request to the Board to close or restructure select programs with low completion rates was submitted, the Provost and her team received faculty input that resulted in changes to our request. The Board approved the updated request. The updated lists of programs slated for elimination or restructuring are online at http://www.uni.edu/program-changes/academic-program-changes.

As I've said before, we are making these strategic changes to protect and strengthen the core mission of the University. As leaders in higher education we have a responsibility to our students, their parents and taxpayers to maintain academic excellence and affordability, and to prepare for the future.

We believe these decisions will help build on historic strengths, while aligning UNI for future success in a challenging and competitive education environment. These changes also will help us reallocate resources to meet current budget requirements and student demand.

The full Board of Regents docket is online at http://www.regents.iowa.gov/Meetings/DocketMemos/12Memos/March2012/March2012docket.htm

We will keep you updated as we move forward.
