Political Campaign Guidelines

Logo

As a public institution, UNI can't endorse a specific candidate or political party.  UNI's role is to provide a setting for debate and discussion of ideas.  Candidate visits add to the university's reputation and offer a great learning opportunity for students.

Reserving Rooms on Campus

How and when can I get a room on campus?

Political candidates are welcome at UNI.  All campaign activities that take place on campus must be sponsored by a recognized UNI student organization, or official university organization office or agency.  Information on university space and recognized student organizations is available from the Maucker Union Administrative Office at (319) 273-2256.

UNI Guidelines on Political Activity on Campus

Political activity on campus, including UNI employees, are covered by UNI, state and federal Guidelines on Political Activity on campus.

Campus Communications

How can candidates provide information to students, faculty and staff?

Posters and fliers

Candidates can provide information to students in several ways.  Through presidential campaign-related events on campus, candidates can post fliers on "open" bulletin boards in academic buildings, the Maucker Union poster display wall and outdoor kiosks.  Requests to display a banner or poster of any kind outdoors on other than a kiosk must be made to University Marketing & Public Relations (319) 273-2762.

Residence Halls and residence dining facilities

Posting/Soliciting Guidelines

Other facilities

The display of posters and announcements in residence halls, dining centers, family housing areas, Maucker Union, and the UNI-Dome is regulated by the directors of these respective areas. Any person or organization wishing to display an announcement in these areas should contact University Marketing & Public Relations or the appropriate departmental office.

Listservs

Registered UNI student organizations may have mailing lists. The organization’s faculty/staff advisor is the official owner of such a list, but a student officer may have co-owner privileges.

Please note that candidates can't use university electronic communications such as the UNI Web site for political communications.

UNI e-newsletters
Announcements about campaign events or candidate visits to campus can be posted in UNIOnline, MyUNIverse News or My UNI Weekend, only if they are sponsored by a UNI department, program or organization.  No commercial or personal announcements are allowed.  Announcements must have news, not opinion content.

The university doesn't provide mailing lists of faculty, staff or students to external parties.

All candidates must contact UNI's Office of Governmental Relations with details of their visit. Please contact Pat Geadelmann at (319) 273-6144 or patricia.geadelmann@uni.edu. Once an appearance has been scheduled, please contact University Marketing & Public Relations at (319) 273-6728 or liz.conklin@uni.edu.
