3.04 Interchange of Students (Regents' Universities)
Since tuition and fees at the three Regents' universities are so nearly
comparable, and since the three universities cooperate so regularly and
effectively on a variety of academic and other programs, it should be
possible to establish a formal "traveling scholars" program
following the models of CIC (Committee on Instututional Cooperation),
MAUI (Mid-American Universities International) and other states in order
to enjoy the benefits of such a program. It is desirable, however, to
publicize to students at the three universities the opportunities which
exist for specialized supplements to both undergraduate and graduate programs
at the other universities and to provide some mechanism for facilitating
the interchange of students who desire specialized work for a limited
amount of time. The objective is to anticipate and to ease the problems
for students who wish to spend a quarter, semester, summer session, or
a year at another Regents' university while making regular progress towards
a degree at their home university. Problems which may develop include
academic advising, housing, financial aid and employment, and possibly
many others. In some cases (e.g. instruction in foreign languages) the
real utility of the concept may be dependent on the development of intensive
courses which condense work ordinarily spread over two or more years into
much shorter periods of time.
It is hereby proposed that a Regents' Universities Interchange Program
be established and that an appropriate committee be appointed to establish
and coordinate the program. This committee will report to the Committee
on Educational Coordination.
These preliminary assumptions are in order:
1. Both undergraduate and graduate students would be eligible.
2. General transfer of credit is already arranged; specific applicability
of work to a degree program would have to be cleared in advance with
the degree advisor on the home campus.
3. Dormitory contracts should be terminable or interruptible for this
purpose.
