2.10 Miscellaneous Course Fees
I. Procedures
A proposed course fee must be approved by the department head and submitted
to the collegiate dean. If the dean approves the recommendation, it is sent
to the Office of Academic Affairs. A committee consisting of the Vice-President
for Academic Affairs, Vice-President for Educational and Student Services,
and Vice-President for Administration and Finance will take final action
on a request. If the proposed fee is approved, the Controller's Office will
be notified for billing.
Requests for fees should contain the name of the course, the catalog course
description, the amount of the fee, and the explanation and justification
for the relation to course activities.
II. Criteria/Justification for Fees
(The general governing principle for fees is that they should not be assessed
for routine costs of instruction.)
1. Extraordinary consumable supplies required for a course, such as materials
in art, photography, home economics, etc.
2. Extraordinary needs or special services; for example, a physical education
course in skiing.
3. Laboratory courses requiring extraordinary materials or supplies.
4. The amount of the fee, and the expenditure of funds, should be directly
related to the function for which it is collected.
III. All course fees will be reviewed for renewal on a four-year cycle.
