1.04 University Symbol
This policy statement explains the correct use of the new University
of Northern Iowa symbol.
I. Purpose
The University's publics become acquainted with UNI through printed materials
such as letters, business cards, brochures, and other publications. In
the past, a variety of symbols and type styles used in many different
ways have represented the University and various departments and divisions
of UNI. A single symbol representing the University of Northern Iowa will
assist the University's identity program and establish a unifying image
for all segments of UNI.
II. How It Will Work
Existing supplies of letterhead, envelopes, and business cards should
be used until they are exhausted; they may not be used after May 31, 1982.
Publications Services in the Office of Public Information Services will
coordinate implementation of the new symbol. Publications Services is
responsible for all design work which uses the University symbol or seal.
III. The University Seal
The University symbol does not replace the University seal. However,
use of the seal is restricted to more formal use: official and legal University
documents, diplomas, official records, invitations, etc. In no instance
is the seal to be used as the primary design element, or as a "filler,"
in any publication.
IV. Other Symbols
The use of secondary symbols on University and departmental stationery
is discouraged. If a secondary symbol is used, it must conform to the
size and placement specifications in the guidelines. No secondary symbols
may be used on business cards.
V. General Guidelines
A. Letterhead
1. The official letterhead is to be used by all departments and divisions
of the University.
2. When letterhead is printed in one color, that color will be black.
Letterhead may be printed in black and purple with only the symbol and
the rule line in purple. A secondary symbol, when used, will be printed
in black.
3. The typeface to be used with the symbol is Clarendon Roman and Light.
4. When a secondary symbol is used, it will be placed at the bottom
of the sheet, directly under the University symbol.
5. The University symbol is to be printed in one color only. It is
never to be screened to print less than 100 percent solid.
B. Envelopes
1. Printing of envelopes will conform to the same basic standards as
the letterhead.
2. No secondary symbols will be used on envelopes.
C. Business Cards
1. All business cards will conform to the standard design.
2. Business cards may be printed in black or black and purple when
two colors are desired. When printed in two colors, only the symbol
and the rule line are to be printed in the second color.
VI. Publications
The new symbol replaces all symbols previously used to identify the
University of Northern Iowa on brochures, catalogs, flyers, and booklets.
This includes all variations of UNI in type or script as well as the campanile.
In no instance is the symbol to be used as the primary design element
in any publication.
