Science Education Collaborative Initiative

Progress Report - August 17, 2007

In February 2007, the Board of Regents asked President Allen and UNI, in close collaboration with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, to lead a Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Collaborative.  For more information about this Initiative visit the Math and Science Initiative Web site at http://www.uni.edu/pres/math-science.

Steering Committee

In late spring, provosts at the three Regents universities named members to a steering committee and defined the charge of this committee.  Members can be found on the Web at http://www.uni.edu/pres/math-science.

Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Summit

The Steering Committee held an Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Summit July 11 on UNI's campus.  For an executive summary and reports from the summit, visit the Web site at www.uni.edu/pres/math-science.

Board of Regents FY'09 Legislative Request for Mathematics and Science Education Collaborative Initiative

The Board of Regents office directed UNI to coordinate a fiscal year 2009 legislative appropriations request for the math and science education initiative.  This proposal is a Regents priority.  The steering committee is drafting the proposal to address the three goals of the initiative and to create the foundation for a sustainable math and science education initiative in Iowa.

As of August 17, the plan is to seek approval for the proposal at the Sept. 18 and 19 Board of Regents meeting.  If the Board approves the proposal, it will be included in the Board of Regents FY '09 Legislative Requests.  For more information, please contact Jeff Weld, jeff.weld@uni.edu.

Inventory Project

The steering committee has launched an inventory project to document all math and science education related initiatives at each of the three Regents universities.  The Department of Education will inventory related projects from AEAs, K-12 schools, community colleges and other professional development sites. The complete inventory will enable the steering committee to better coordinate, evaluate, and replicate activities. The inventory will be available to the campus in late fall.
