According to Department of Education reports, Iowa is experiencing a shortage of math and science teachers.  The result of this shortage is compromised math and science education for many of Iowa's students. This stands as an ominous backdrop to the reality that fifteen of the twenty fastest growing occupations of the 21st century will require substantial math and science preparation. In response to these challenges, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, requested that UNI lead a mathematics and science education collaborative initiative with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

Teaching

The Regents collaborative initiative has three basic goals:

  • To improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students.

  • To prepare more high quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa’s schools.

  • Promote statewide collaboration and cooperation.
