Careers in
Political Science: International Options
The
marketability of political science majors in
international careers has risen sharply in the last two
decades, as public policies increasingly take on global
dimensions and the United States expands its economic,
political and military dominance. A wide range of
positions with international business and banking,
international organizations, including the World Bank
and other United Nations agencies or the US government
are available. Many non-governmental organizations
(NGOs), such as CARE, Human Rights Watch and Greenpeace,
promote community development and advocacy programs
internationally and look for employees who can assist in
financing, managing and publicizing their organization.
In addition to the analytical skills acquired in
political science, employers also emphasize the
importance of knowledge of a particular area (e.g. East
Asia), foreign language skills, and some training in
Economics. The department offers a minor in
international affairs to help students focus their
efforts. Many managerial or senior analyst positions as
well as program officers require a Master Degree. See
the department link to graduate study.
Among possible
positions in the international field are: program
officer, private foundation such as the Ford or
Rockefeller Foundations; public affairs officer, US
Embassy; Peace Corps volunteer; program assistant, Save
the Children; development analyst, International
Monetary Fund; vice-president for international
marketing for a multi-national corporation such as
Microsoft; lobbyist for an international association;
political risk analyst for an international investment
company such as Goldman Sachs.
