Careers in
Political Science: Business
Despite what
some believe, a business major is not a requirement for
many positions in the business world. Most of America’s
largest corporations have management training programs
of their own. Such corporations look to recruit bright
and motivated liberal arts undergraduates with strong
critical thinking skills and train them for specific
positions in their corporation. A growing field over the
last decade has been in business consulting. Firms such
as McKinsey or Deloitte Touche hire analysts to
re-engineer corporations, making them more efficient and
profitable. Consulting firms look to hire people with
sharp analytical and organizational skills. A political
science major offers many skills that are in high demand
in the business world, including research, writing and
analytical skills as well as a familiarity with
governmental institutions and policies. Those interested
in a business career should also acquire additional
background in basic economic concepts and statistics as
well as pursue internship opportunities. Course work on
political economy, public policy and international
affairs should be emphasized for those interested in
promoting themselves as specialists in
government-business relations. For further information
