Section I - Policy Statement
All employees must be informed about the hazardous chemicals to which they are exposed. Research laboratories must submit a plan for suspension and handling of hazardous chemicals and a plan for the development of training programs. All employees of the university are encouraged to take an active role in identifying potential hazards and bringing them to the attention of their department head and/or the Safety Officer.
Section II - Definitions
A "hazardous chemical" is any chemical which is a physical or health hazard. "Physical hazard" means a chemical that is a combustible liquid, a compressed gas, explosive. flammable, or organic peroxide, an oxidizer, pyrophoric, unstable (reactive) or water-reactive.
"Health hazard" means a chemical for which there is statistically significant evidence that acute and chronic health effects may occur in exposed employees.
Section III - Components
Hazardous Chemical List
A current inventory of the hazardous chemicals known to be used or stored at UNI will be prepared and maintained by department heads. Copies shall be available at each work site and provided to the Safety Officer.
Labels and Warnings
Each container of hazardous chemicals shall be labeled, tagged, or marked with the following information:
identity of the hazardous chemical
appropriate hazard warnings
name and address of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
An MSDS shall be provided by the manufacturer or importer for all hazardous chemicals used on UNI premises. A copy shall be readily accessible during each work shift to employees when they are in their work area(s) and a master file of these MSDS shall be maintained by the UNI Safety Officer.
Employee Information and Training
The University is committed to doing everything possible to make employees aware of any potential hazards in their work areas and to provide training in appropriate situations.
Section IV - Responsibilities
Responsibility for policy implementation and follow-up to ensure compliance will rest with department heads. The University Safety Officer and Personnel Training Coordinator are available for consultation and assistance. The university safety officer is responsible for reviewing departmental plans and identifying situations requiring corrective action.
