Philosophy & World Religions
Consider a gift to the Department of Philosophy & Religion in support of either our educational programs or our students. The department has recently begun the following initiatives:
The interdisciplinary Ethics Minor: In order to encourage ethics education and ethical reflection across disciplines and careers, the department offers a 6-course Ethics Minor to students in any major. We are looking for scholarship support to encourage those students who are especially concerned about the ethical foundation of our lives and communities. A full scholarship (the tuition for the 6 courses) is $3000.
Other initiatives in ethics support the study of ethics across the university and in Iowa:
The David W. Wilson Chair in Business Ethics: Internationally known business ethicist Donna J. Wood is the first incumbent. UNI is in a position to be a regional leader in business ethics, and we are grateful for Philosophy & Religion alumnus, David W. Wilson, for his vision and the gift of the endowed chair.
Medical Ethics: Three years ago Assistant Professor Francis D. Degnin was hired to teach bio-medical ethics at the university, and to serve as a medical ethics educator and consultant in the region. He teaches courses each semester to completely packed rooms, and has worked with the area hospital ethics committees; physicians, nurses and other medical professionals; local churches and clergy, and other groups in Iowa. The department is in need of funds to support Professor Degnin’s community outreach, and to provide additional resources, such as visiting lectureships, for the study of biomedical ethics.
Religion and Society: Departmental initiatives in the area of Religion and Society are also in early stages. The department wants to be able to offer courses and community programming highlighting the religious diversity of Iowa as well as recent religious and political developments around the world. We are seeking support for professorships, lectureships, and study abroad in
--Roman Catholic Studies
--The Religion and Culture of India
At anytime you may earmark your donation to the University specifically for Philosophy and Religion, and specifically for any of the initiatives outlined above.
In Honor of Beloved Professors: In addition, the following beloved professors have recently retired after decades of teaching, advising, and befriending hundreds of UNI students. Please consider a gift in their honor:
We are also grateful for those who remember the department in their estate planning.
