January 2011 Notes

PHILOSOPHY CLUB MEETING -- this Friday, January 28, 5:00 pm, in Baker 134 (the Fox Room). We will briefly consider possible discussion topics and movie recommendations for this semester, and then move on to a topic to be announced at the meeting. Pizza will be available. The Philosophy Club meets every Friday afternoon, alternating between discussion of a topic and the viewing and discussion of a film. All students are welcome.

GENERAL SUMMER STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION SESSION -- this Friday, January 28, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, Gilchrest 007. Have you ever considered taking a course abroad during the summer? Join this meeting to find out about the available opportunities for summer 2011, and their details.

 

LECTURE AND DISCUSSION ON THE DREAM ACT -- will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 31, in the social hall at St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center. A lecture and discussion based on the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. People are encouraged to bring their own ideas and opinions on the law and participate in an open, civil discussion with people of all backgrounds.

 

MEDIA LEADERSHIP PANEL -- from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.,Thursday, Feb. 3, in the State College Room, MAU. Panelists include our very own John Anderson, a philosophy major, President of the Philosophy Club, and the executive editor of the Northern Iowan; Julie Kraft, TV consultant, Frank N. Magid Associates; and Nancy Newhoff, editor, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier.

DARWIN WEEK -- Monday, February 7 - Thursday, February 10. The week-long event will feature a series of presentations by faculty members from UNI as well as other invited speakers. Each day will feature a theme around which the lectures will be focused, and each day will culminate with a keynote speaker. The themes include: Sexuality (Monday), Religion (Tuesday), Evolution (Wednesday) and Critical Thought (Thursday). All events are free and open to the public.

-- Applications for student scholarships are due FEBRUARY 15. If you are major in our department, we strongly encourage you to apply.
