The office of Academic Advising serves students in transition: deciding students, students seeking alternative majors, first-year students and students reassessing their current academic situation.
The office of Academic Advising can help students:

The Academic Learning Center is comprised of a variety of learning resources inlcuding Academic Achievement and Retention Services, Examination Services, Student Support Services, Math Center, Reading and Learning Center, and Writing Center.

Academic Achievement and Retention Services empowers students to achieve academic success and to develop personal/professional strengths. Services include:
- Personalized advising, academic planning, career/graduate school exploration and financial literacy education
- Individual and group tutoring for selected courses
- Workshops to enhance study skills, finances and career interests
- Strategies for Academic Success, a two-credit course
- Collaboration with other campus offices in delivering orientation and transition programs

UNI offers credit by examination, certification examinations and most major national college and professional school entrance examinations. In addition to test administration, this program provides test registration and preparation assistance.

Student Support Services is a federally-funded TRIO program that offers free guidance services for undergraduate students. Services include tutoring and study sessions, advice about majors and careers, assistance with financial aid and scholarship forms and cultural events. Eligible students must meet at least one of three criteria:
- first-generation college student (neither parent has a bachelor's degree)
- family income meets federal guidelines
- student has a learning or physical disability

The Math Center's mission is to serve as an academic resource for the University of Northern Iowa student body. Specifically, the Math Center seeks to assist students enrolled in mathematics courses at UNI by providing sound academic tutoring using knowledgeable staff and creating a welcoming student centered atmosphere. The Math Center works in concert with the Mathematics Department and the affiliates of the Academic Learning Center to provide the following services:
- Free one-on-one tutoring, no appointment necessary
- Small group instruction
- Review of mathematical concepts
- Study Skills for mathematics
- Six-week, non-credit courses for:
- PPST-Math - Preparation for the exam required for admission to Teacher Education Program.
- GRE-Quantitative - Review and practice for the mathematics section of the Graduate Record Exam.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES - Develop new learning and test preparation strategies in only four weeks.
ASK-A-TUTOR - Free tutors and study groups focus on your subjects of concern.
PPST-READING - Develop reading-test confidence in this four-week course.
GRE-VERBAL - Learn new strategies for this high-stakes standardized exam.
SUPPORTIVE SEMINARS - Personalized strategies for high-risk courses presented in the form of a collaborative study group.

Make an appointment to receive free, one-on-one assistance, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. Trained, certified writing assistants and students work together to
- Break writer's block and get projects started
- Identify problems with focus, development, organization, clarity and grammar
- Plan strategies for improving rough drafts and overall writing skill
- Prepare for PPST, GRE, MCAT, and other standardized essay exams

ITS - Educational Technology

ITS - Educational Technology offers two areas of service for students: free computer workshops from Technology and Training, and use of the specialized computers and equipment in The Production House. Reservations are required for the free daily computer workshops from beginning through advanced levels for all UNI students. The Production HOuse allows students to produce high quality multimedia products.

SDS offers a wide variety of accommodations and services to students with disabilities. Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, pending approval of documentation and based on a student's input.
Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Provides a variety of services to eligible students with a disability as defined by the ADA. The disability must constitute a barrier to employment or necessary training to prepare for emploment. Services may include financial assistance for obtaining an assessment documenting a disability, purchasing assistive technology, tuition costs, personal assistance and other needs. Counseling and guidance are provided to help select a suitable vocational goal and to identify services needed to reach that goal.
