UNI FRENCH SUMMER INSTITUTE ON-CAMPUS FOR TEACHERS OF FRENCH

A three-week session in Cedar Falls from July 11 to July 29, 2005 for four hours of graduate credit.

PURPOSE

This Institute program is designed for those teachers: 1) who aren’t free to attend the program in France, 2) who want to improve their French pronunciation and linguistic literacy, 3) who wish to share with other French teachers.

720:226 French Graduate Summer Symposium: Teaching of  Pronunciation and Diction
Principles and techniques of teaching French pronunciation, including analysis of the sound system and covering features and training in applying these principles to 1. one's own phonetic accuracy, and 2. the evaluation of students' speech.

720:161(g) Problems in French Pronunciation.
Correction of and practice in producing French sounds, intonation, rhythm, and accent.

It is expected that most participants will take the 720:226 course.

  720:203 Structure of French. Phonology, morphology, and syntax of current French, stressing  areas of French structure which cause problems for native speakers of English.

PROGRAM ON CAMPUS

A typical day in Cedar Falls will be 8:30 - 10:00 French Structure, 10:00 - 10:30 Coffee break, chansons, 10:30 - 12:00 Problems in French Pronunciation, 12:30 - 1:30 Déjeuner à la table française. In addition, there will be planned (evening) sessions for French activities (e.g., pétanque, film français, présentations culturelles). In the afternoon, participants will be free to do individual reading in the library and share with other French teachers. There are many facilities on or very near our campus, including tennis courts, swimming pools, and two public golf courses.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  •  A Bachelor's Degree or its equivalent

  •  All participants must be admitted as graduate students by the University of Northern Iowa.

COST

Tuition for four graduate semester hours through this program will be $1220.

Housing, if required, is in the French section of an air-conditioned dorm. Rooms in 2004 cost $17 (double occupancy) and $20.75 (single occupancy) per day. Exact room costs will be announced in Spring 2005.

Meals will be in the Piazza in Redeker Center (#44 the campus map). While a meal plan is available (see http://www.uni.edu/dor/conferences/dining/index.htm), it is optional, whether or not one is housed on campus. It is possible to purchase individual meals.
