CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --'Take Back the Night,' an annual observance recognizing the struggles of sexual violence survivors, will be Tuesday, April 15, on top of the University of Northern Iowa's Maucker Union.

'The event is a time for the community to unify against sexual violence and battering,' explains Courtney Clausen, a UNI student and chairperson of the Gender Equity Association. 'It's also a time for survivors of sexual and physical violence to celebrate their healing and to stand with others in resistance to the pervasive and threatening nature of sexual violence in our society.'

The observation begins at 5 p.m., with an acoustic guitar performance by Emily Durdin, a junior from Cedar Falls, and Colleen Jameson of Cedar Falls. At 6 p.m., the Students Against a Violent Environment Forum Actors will perform. Musicians Amy Baldwin, a Wartburg College student; and Andy Schmidt, a UNI junior from Cedar Falls, perform at 6:45 p.m. Anyone wishing to share stories or make statements about sexual violence may attend an open microphone event at 7:15 p.m. A candlelight vigil takes place at 7:45 p.m., and the annual March on the Hill begins at 8 p.m. All events will be on top of the Union. The rain location is the Union Expanion A.

Take Back the Night is sponsored by the Gender Equality Association, the Women's Studies Program, Students Against a Violent Environment, and the Northern Iowa Student Government.
