CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Strayer-Wood Theatre will present William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice (BEACH)!" at 7:30 p.m., April 11 to 13 and April 18 to 20, and at 2 p.m., April 14 and 21, in the Strayer-Wood Theatre on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
In this comedy, Shakespeare weaves together two ancient folk myths. One involves a vengeful, greedy Jewish creditor trying to exact a pound of flesh from a Christian over an unpaid debt, and the other involves a marriage suitor's choice among three chests to win the hand of his beloved. This production has been updated to the Reaganite 1980's and set in Venice Beach and Bel Air, Calif., and features professional actor Larry Paulsen in the role of Shylock.
"The Merchant of Venice (BEACH)!" is the final offering of the Strayer-Wood Theatre's 2012-2013 season, "Renewal: Uplifting the Spirit." The production is directed by Richard Glockner, associate professor of performance. Scenery is designed by Leonard M. Curtis, associate professor of design and production; lighting is designed by Ron Koinzan, technical director of the Strayer-Wood Theatre; costumes are designed by Amy Rohrberg, associate professor of design and production; sound and video effects are designed by Shawn Poellet, senior theatre design and production major; hair and makeup are designed by Kelly Craig, senior drama and theatre for youth major. The stage manager is Jessi Kadolph, a 2012 alumnus of the UNI theatre program.
Tickets are $16 for adults and free for UNI students with their student ID. Tickets can be purchased from the Strayer-Wood Theatre lobby box office between noon and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The box office opens one hour before curtain time. Tickets may also be purchased at any UNItix location.
