CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Wellness and Recreation Services at the University of Northern Iowa will offer a new aquatic program, GaurdStart, for children 11 to 14 years old. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, July 23 through 26.

The objectives of the program include accident prevention, fitness, rescue responses, leadership and professionalism. These objectives fulfill a basic knowledge and skill set that aid in successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguarding course.

The GuardStart fee is $80 which includes all course materials. To qualify for the program, a swim pretest is required. The pretest consists of a 25-yard front crawl swim with proper breathing, treading water for one minute and submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater. To request a spot in the program, email swimlessons@uni.edu. For additional information regarding GuardStart, contact Justin Holman at 319-273-3972.
