CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host its 3rd annual Women in Politics Scholarship benefit Sept. 19. This bi-partisan event will recognize one female political science or public administration major at UNI, and aims to encourage more women to participate in the political arena.
Iowa's population is 50 percent female, yet only about 21 percent of Iowa legislators are women. Iowa is also one of only two states that have never elected a female governor or member of Congress.
"Research consistently shows that women tend to underestimate their ability to win office," said Christopher Larimer, associate professor of political science at UNI. "Events like this, that highlight women's success in pursuing and winning public office, hopefully help overcome such perceptions and encourage more young women to run for office."
Those interested in purchasing tickets for the event should contact Donna Hoffman, head of the UNI Department of Political Science, at 319-273-5916 or email@example.com.
