CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --The Orchesis Dance Company at the University of Northern Iowa will present its 'Dance Gala 2002' Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC). Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The show will include 27 dancers performing a variety of modern, ballet, jazz and tap numbers choreographed by students and faculty.
Guest performances will be presented by the UNI Dance Team, the UNI International Dance Theatre and UNI's Capoiera Club. Capoiera Club members will perform a combination Brazilian martial arts/dance form in the GBPAC lobby during intermission. Orchesis advisor Ranae Keane-Bamsey, UNI instructor in dance, said that this dance form was developed several centuries ago when Africans enslaved in Brazil hid their martial arts skills in dance.
Tickets for the Dance Gala are $6 for adults and $4 for students. They are available through the Gallagher-Bluedorn box office by calling (319) 273-SHOW (7469). They also will be sold at the door.
Orchesis is funded in part by Northern Iowa Student Government, with additional funding from UNI's School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services. For additional information, contact Ranae Keane-Bamsey at (319) 273-3560 or Orchesis President Nicole Harris at (319) 859-0114.
