CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa is ranked second in the "Best Regional Universities (Midwest)" category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2013 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook.

UNI also was No. 22 on a combined list of all public and private Midwest regional universities -- one of only three public institutions to make the list of top Midwest regional universities.

"Our focus is on providing the best undergraduate education in the state," said Benjamin Allen, UNI president. "We have a national reputation for our programs in teacher education, accounting, music and communication sciences and disorders, among others. This ranking affirms our university mission and strategic efforts to continue to provide students and faculty high-quality academic programs."

The magazine's ranking criteria include peer assessment, academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, graduation-rate performance and alumni giving rate.
