CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa has made significant reductions in its use of packaging products for the 2012-2013 academic year.
In the last year, the Department of Residence (DOR) saved $16,423.13 on paper items in the dining centers. The number of disposed packaging items also decreased by 503,535.
Many of these reductions are due to a new carry-out program. In 2012, DOR implemented ToGo, which allows students to get food directly from dining venues and take it with them. The program features reusable clamshell containers, flatware and beverage containers, which have increased options for carry out while reducing the use of disposable containers and waste.
