CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Since its start in 1978, the Iowa Writing Project (IWP), at the University of Northern Iowa since 2003, has been actively engaging teachers in professional learning to enhance their teaching and leadership skills. This year, the IWP received $20,000 in funding from the National Writing Project for a program that will study teacher leadership applied in core areas of curriculum.
The project includes 21 teachers, partnered with experienced IWP leaders, for a year-long study of teacher leadership in action. The group will meet quarterly throughout the school year and work online, concluding with a one-week session in June 2013.
"The initiative promises valuable insight into the forms teacher leadership is taking, the roles open to teachers willing to exert influence beyond their classrooms and how some excellent teachers are enacting these roles and opportunities," said James Davis, associate professor of languages and literatures at UNI.
