CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Northern Iowa will host Cathy Areu, founding publisher of Catalina magazine, at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 4, in Bengston Auditorium in Russell Hall with a reception to follow.

Areu is best known for launching Catalina magazine, one of the largest lifestyle magazines for Hispanic women. The magazine was launched in 2001 in hopes of promoting a more positive image of Hispanic women. In its first year, Catalina earned the "Lead Launch" distinction from Folio magazine.

Areu's lecture will focus on empowering the voices of Latinas. "Our hope is that she will serve as an example to the college student population to be an agent of change, to overcome adversity, and to provide hope," said Tabatha Cruz, program coordinator for UNI's Center for Multicultural Education. "She is a great example and role model in terms of creating -- putting your ideas out in the universe and watching them grow."

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cruz, at 319-273-2250 or tabatha.cruz@uni.edu.
