CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host the Adapted Sports Camp from June 12 through 15 at various wellness facilities on UNI's campus. The camp is for young athletes with a lower limb disability who use wheelchairs for adapted sports.
The Adapted Sports Camp is the only opportunity in the state for youth using wheelchairs to compete in recreational sports. Athletes can participate in track and field, basketball, hand cycling, football, rugby, softball, tennis and many others.
"The goal is to get most athletes with a disability to learn that they have many abilities to achieve success in sports activities, and then translate that to have the confidence to look at many other obstacles that may come up in their lives and find a way to overcome them," said Eherenman, co-director of the UNI Adapted Sports Camp. "It's hard to describe in words all the effects that it has on their lives. We see so many changes in all of the athletes from when they come into camp each year and when they go out."
