Present: Cliff Highnam President (presiding), Joe Alemao Member at Large, Lea Anderson Treasurer, Donna Brown 1st Vice President, Carlin Hageman Chair of Board, Chris Neuhaus Secretary, Darla Sharar Member at Large.
Cliff Highnam and Carlin Hageman asked that the secretary write thank you letters to the general managers of Deels Food Store, Fareway, and Hy-Vee for their donations to the November 4th Pancake Breakfast. Ed Smith and Paula Padavich were instrumental in soliciting the following items from these stores:
Deels Food Store Milk

Hy-Vee Coffee
Cliff Highnam asked
the Board to consider funding the purchase of the diagnostic/screening tape Quiet
Pleases for the UNI Speech and Hearing Clinic.
Donna Brown put forth a motion to have the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club purchase
Quiet Pleases for the Clinic. This
was seconded by Carlin Hageman and approved unanimously.
Discussion turned to
the upcoming Awards Banquet. Cliff Highnam
noted that the combined cost of the awards for Service to Mankind, and the
Sertoman of the Year, would likely total about $200. Chris Neuhaus noted that
the Club has $400 budgeted this year for awards. Cliff
Highnam asked to Secretary to initiate the purchase of a new banner and a number of stands
for new and old Cedar Falls Sertoma Club banners. Lea
Anderson volunteered to attach new awards to the new Club banner.
Carlin Hageman noted
that Senator Grassley has been a supporter of speech pathology and might be considered as
a possible recipient of the Service to Mankind award.
Cliff Highnam
initiated a discussion on recruitment. Chris
Neuhaus noted that the club has recruited four members this past quarter Angie
Burda, Rachel Folland, David Greene, and Bill Robinson.
Lloyd Berry may also join the club this quarter. Carlin Hageman suggested that we consider
recruiting from among the new arrivals to Cedar Falls and Waterloo that are announced in
the Business Profiles section of the Waterloo Courier. Donna Sharar suggested that we also target new
faculty at UNI as announced in the Campus News Network.
Chris Neuhaus suggested that merchants in the vicinity of Main Street
(walking distance to the Broom Factory) might be targeted as well. Chris Neuhaus also suggested that the Club
consider purchasing a camera to document club activities and for the purpose of publicity
and recruitment.
Cliff Highnam noted
that the new Cedar Falls Sertoma Club Directory would be updated in early January.
Cliff Highnam then
raised the issue of purchasing a defibrillator training kit noting that the cost of
such a kit would be $300 and that this cost would not be covered by the grant to purchase
a portable defibrillator. Carlin Hageman
moved that the Club purchase a defibrillator training kit for the Cedar Falls Sertoma
Club. Donna brown seconded this, and the
motion was passed unanimously.
Carlin Hageman
briefly spoke on the fund-raising proposal to provide American flags for certain holidays
(Memorial Day, July 4th, Veterans Day, etc.).
Each flag would cost the Club between $12 and $15 dollars. Carlin would like to initiate detailed planning
for this proposal in the near future.
Carlin Hageman mentioned that the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club display case is in need of repairs and suggested that a work party might be organized to resuscitate this kit. Cliff Highnam brought forward the possibility of simply purchasing a new display board/case.
Carlin Hageman noted that as Governor he hopes to initiate and coordinate efforts from both the Oelwein and Cedar Falls Sertoma Clubs towards the formation of a new Sertoma Club in Independence during the 3rd quarter of this year.
Respectfully submitted,
Chris Neuhaus
Secretary,
Cedar Falls Sertoma Club
