Cedar Falls Sertoma Club
Board Meeting
Minutes  05/31/2001

Present:             Cliff Highnam (presiding), Lea Andersen, Donna Brown, Chris Neuhaus and Bob Robinson.

1.                                           The Board concurred with Bob Robinson (Sturgis Falls-Meister, 2001) that – due to an expected low club turnout for this event – the menu for this event should be simplified.  It was agreed that Fajita-Steak sandwiches should be dropped from the menu this year.   If the number of volunteers should be particularly low, the menu might be pared back to burgers, popcorn, and pop.  Bob Robinson will distribute a sign-up sheet for the Sturgis Falls food booth during the June 5th meeting.

2.                                           Cliff Highnam announced that the American Flag fundraiser would be delayed.  A number of different officials from the city and various utilities need to give their approval for this project.  Marty Ryan of the Cedar Falls Public Works has requested that our club get City Council approval before we proceed.  With these delays the Board agreed that the American Flag project should begin next year.

3.                                           Lea Anderson announced that the profit from the golf outing was only $486.  Higher green fees, the threat of rain (resulting in a number of no-shows), and higher food prices all contributed to the poor yield.  The Board has considered naming next year’s tournament the “Doc Balthazor Memorial” and holding this tournament at Beaver Hills or at least holding the event when many of Doc Balthazor’s friends and colleagues from Beaver Hills could attend.  The Board agreed to raise entry fees to $40 for next year.

4.                                           Lea Anderson noted that at this time the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club is running very low on funds.  Board members noted that fund-raising events from the past year such as Sturgis Falls, the Pancake Breakfast, the Valentine Bun sale, and the Golf Outing have all yielded less than expected.  This, coupled with generous donations from the club over the past year, has resulted in a drained budget.   The Club needs to raise more money.

5.                                           Cliff Highnam announced that the Community Foundation of Waterloo/CF has requested a donation from our club.  The Community Foundation has asked our club to purchase 20 tickets @ $5 apiece ($100) for an Iowa Chorus & Jazz Band concert.  The purpose of this event is to promote reading for at-risk children.  The proceeds from this event will be used to purchase reading supplies for local day care centers.  The Board approved this donation.

6.                                           The Board will ask Joe Alemao to serve as Club Historian.   The Club Historian will maintain a scrapbook of club events (photos, fliers, newspaper articles) and to update the Sertoma display board.  A reincarnation of the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club display board is nearly complete – thanks to the talents and hard work of Cliff Highnam.

7.                                           The Board once again expresses its gratitude to Lea Anderson for hosting the Executive Board of the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club.  The setting is wonderful, and the popcorn and beverages always greatly appreciated.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Neuhaus
