Notes on Funding Solar Car
Wednesday, March 24, 2004
Sertomafolk:
Those of you who were at the meeting this past week enjoyed a great talk by Pat
Higby on the Electrathon (High School Electric Race Car contests
-

http://www.uni.edu/ceee/electrathon/ -
http://www.uni.edu/ceee/electrathon/2003fallrace.htm) and on the Junior
Solar Sprint (Junior High solar powered race cars -
http://www.nrel.gov/education/student/natjss.html -
http://www.umpr.uni.edu/NewsReleases.asp?NewsID=1056 ) ... (thanks Carol for
inviting Pat).
Pat wanted to know if our club would be willing to sponsor some of the awards
...
Awards run about $12-$15 for individual student awards (often entries are put
forward by teams of students ... number?) ... and about $25 for
a school trophy/plaque.
Those present were very interested in awarding prizes for:
Most Patriotic Entry (Entries?) and Best Patriotic
Performer
Most Patriotic Entry - would simply be that entry that conveyed the most
patriotic appearance (even if it never manages to leave the gate).
Best Patriotic Performer - would be the fastest vehicle with a patriotic
theme.
From what Pat Higby noted I believe that $250 should easily cover the awards to
students and school ... for both entries.
Note - this would still allow our club to meet its promotion of patriotism
theme!
Note II - some one or two of us would need to be present to judge the cars and
hand out the awards (I think I for one would like to be present
for this event).
Note III - while its too late for this year - we may want to also award similar
prizes for the Electrathon held next Spring 2005.
Sooooo.... as Pat needs to hear back from us very soon ... please indicate by
e-mail if you would support funding of $250 in student and
school prizes - for the "Most Patriotic Entry" and the "Best Patriotic
Performer" at the Junior Solar Sprint to be held on May 15, 2004 on the
UNI Campus.
Please let me know right away (no later than Thursday) ... I need to get back to
Pat by Friday!
Many Thanks,

Chris,
Thank you so much!!! I'm sure $250 will be enough for some very nice awards! We
will send you a draft of the proposed plaques for the
students (two per car) and schools. That will be six plaques total (about $100).
I also suggest we give one or two PV panels to each
school. That would be an additional $70 to $140. Actually, if you don't mind,
I'd prefer to give a single panel and use the remaining
funds for other race expenses. If you prefer I give two panels per school,
please let me know.
Thanks again! I look forward to your group's participation in our race!

Cedar Valley SERTOMA Folk:
David Greene and Bill Robinson will be attending this Saturday's UNI Junior
Solar Car Sprint to give out the following awards from our club:
Most Patriotic Entry
(most inspiring - before take off!)
Best Patriotic Performer
(fastest car with patriotic theme)
BTW - our club gets pretty good advertising on the Jr. Solar Sprint website -
http://www.uni.edu/ceee/juniorsprint/ - reads: "Special
Awards will be offered for: Most Patriotic Entry & Best Patriotic Performer Made
possible by Cedar Falls (oops) Sertoma"
Thanks Dave and Bill!
