Cedar Valley Sertoma Club
Board Meeting Minutes
Thursday, March 14, 2002
Present: Lea Andersen, Lloyd Berry, Donna Brown, Dave Greene, Carlin
Hageman, Cliff
Highnam, Chris Neuhaus, Bill Robinson
1. Donna Brown brought the meeting to order - Cliff Highnam (presiding).
2. Carlin Hageman reviewed the Flag Fund Raising project to date and passed around a
flier noting that the flier should be more colorful and include the sponsorships of the
Cedar Valley Sertoma Club. Individuals who purchase a flag would be given a small
card/paper that contains information about when the flags will be flown and perhaps a
Cedar Valley Sertoma Club contact number.
Carlin noted that individual flags will generally run from $10-$25 and that the Club will
need to buy from different vendors (no one vendor has enough flags on hand to supply our
projected needs).
Most expensive pole-and-flag package would be $24-$28 while least expensive runs about
$14. Board members were in favor of utilizing a more expensive nylon fabric and
ordering larger flags as opposed to ordering either smaller flags or flags made of
polyfiber fabric. It was suggested that the flags might be flown during the entire
weekend surrounding the particular national holiday on which the Club supplies a flag.
Carlin would like club members to begin selling flag contracts as soon as the project is
up and running - perhaps very early April.
It was decided to order 30 flags now - one per member. They could then be used as samples.
It was suggested every member be responsible for selling one flag.
Dates on which the Club is considering supplying American Flags include:
2. Chris Neuhaus reviewed the minutes from the previous Board Meeting Thursday
January 10, 2002 posted at - http://www.uni.edu/neuhaus/sertoma/minutes/january2002.html.
Bill Robinson moved the acceptance of the minutes. Lloyd Berry provided a 2nd.
Motion to accept passed.
3. Lloyd Berry presented the Treasurers report (February 19, 2001 to March 14,
2002). The balance in the General Account is now $1,377.86. The balance in
the Sponsorship Account is now $2,343.18. Dave Greene moved the acceptance of the
minutes. Chris Neuhaus provided a 2nd. Motion to accept passed.
4. Donna Brown inquire about those planning to attend the Regional Conference in Omaha on
May 2-4. To date Carlin Hagemen and (we believe) Bob Robinson plan to attend the
conference - deadline for early registration is April 1!
5. Cliff Highnam raised the question of Club donations to individuals requesting financial
assistance with their medical bills for hearing related examinations or operations.
Bill Robinson noted that while the Waterloo Club did provide assistance to individuals -
this was done through their foundation. Dave Greene noted that the Waterloo Club
Foundation regularly spent about $3000 per year on individuals. Lloyd Berry noted
that a second request from another individual for assistance with the bills for an inner
ear operation - this for $50,000 - was directed towards our Club. After much
discussion Lloyd Berry moved that the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club not attempt to fund
individual requests for help with medical bills related to hearing examinations and
operations. Chris Neuhaus provided a 2nd. The motion passed.
6. Cliff Highnam led a discussion on forming a Collegiate Sertoma Club at UNI that would
focus learning and teaching sign-language. Cliff noted that there is already an
instructor at UNI interested in forming a sign-language club. Though the Board was
enthusiastic about the proposal questions concerning the costs of supporting such a club
were raised. Cliff Highnam will contact administrators at UNI to determine
the regulations surrounding campus clubs. Chris Neuhaus will contact Sertoma
International, some Collegiate Sertoma Clubs and a number of Sertoma Clubs that support
Collegiate Sertoma Clubs to gather more information concerning the requirements and costs
of starting and supporting Collegiate Sertoma Clubs.
7. Donna Brown wanted to ask Governor Carlin (who already left our meeting) about the status of our Service to Mankind District Award candidate Dr. Paul Strayer. If he's the District winner we want to make sure his name is forwarded to Regional. Cliff Highnam noted that the deadline - March 15 - was nearly upon us (beware the Ides of March etc.).
8. The Board discussed new locations for the 2002 Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. Lloyd Berry announced that the First United Methodist Church may charge as much as $240 to host such an event. As a church member Lloyd may be able to get us a reduced rate. Additional locations are also being considered.
9. The Board will next meet on April 11th and if necessary on April 25th (to work on
the Bylaws).
10. Donna announced she was late for her appointment and that we all had to
"scoot" - the Board professed their apologies - Cliff moved adjournment - 2nd by
Lea - the Board voted approval by exiting ... but not before unanimously agreeing that
Lloyd Berry is the proud owner of one very fine cowboy hat :-) .
Many thanks to Donna Brown for hosting these meetings!!! (and editing these
minutes!)
