Cedar Valley Sertoma Club
Board Meeting - Minutes
Thursday, January 9, 2003
Present: Joe Alemao, Lloyd Berry, Donna Brown,
Angie Burda, Carol Cooper, Carlin Hageman, Chris Neuhaus,
Paula Padavich, Bill Robinson.
Old Business
Donna Brown called the meeting to order at 5:20 p.m.
The Board read the minutes from the previous
meeting on
Thursday, November 14, 2002. Lloyd moved to accept the minutes
and Carlin provided
a 2nd. Minutes accepted.
Lloyd gave the Treasurer's Report. There was $1,982.80 in the
General Account and
$1,860.39 in the Sponsorship Account. Carlin moved to accept the
report and Paula
provided a 2nd. Treasurer's Report accepted.
New Business
Donna announced that Judy Harrington needs to have a flag placed in her
yard for 2003.
At Lloyd's suggestion the Board agreed to pay for a complimentary flag
in 2003 for Bill
Jochumsen (awarded Service to Mankind in 1995) in recognition of his long-term
support for the Cedar Falls and
Cedar Valley Sertoma Clubs.
Paula announced that the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club Bylaws have been
approved by Sertoma International.
She thanked all who participated in the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club Bylaws
revision process (and quite a number of Sertomans did work on this!).
Special thanks to Bill Robinson who engineered a fine (there's that word
again) finish to the Bylaws.
Angie announced that the Valentines-Cinnamon-Bun fundraiser is kicking
into high gear. Advertisements will be placed in the Courier, website
announcements and paper fliers
will be produced in the near future. NOTE - we
will limit delivery to the local Cedar Falls/Waterloo area
this year! (No trips to La Porte City and beyond). Carlin
noted that cinnamon bun construction would take place on Thursday,
February
13 at the
American
Legion Hall on 114 East 14th Street - one block south of the Cedar
Falls Recreation Center (AKA location of Sertoma Pancake Breakfast 2002).
The Board
agreed to hold its next meeting at the cinnamon bun construction site
(AKA American Legion Hall) to insure a better turn out for bun building
and board meeting alike. Carlin and Cliff will be cooking buns throughout
the day and would welcome any and all help - especially towards evening.
Carlin recommended that the club order another 100 American flags. Donna
will send
a sample American flag service advertisement to all CV Sertoma members via
e-mail.
Carol spoke on the Heritage Essay Contest. She expressed some hesitancy
about holding an art contest this year. The Board recommended that an Art
Contest be considered for 2004 instead - after guidelines for
submissions and judging have been established. This year students
from the ninth grade in
Cedar Falls and from the eighth Grade in both Cedar Falls and Waterloo
will be eligible to enter the essay contest. A total of six prizes
will be awarded this year. Three prizes will be awarded to for essays
from the
ninth grade entries and three prizes will be awarded for the winning
entries from the eighth grade.
Donna asked Chris to look into procuring letters for the Club
Awards Banner so that it reads Cedar Valley Sertoma Club (rather than
Cedar Falls Sertoma Club). The Board agreed that the Waterloo Sertoma
Club and
Awards Banners be located and also hung during meetings and events along
with the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club and Cedar Valley Sertoma Club Banners.
Chris will soon solicit suggestions for the 2003 Service to Mankind Award
and pass out ballots for the 2003 Sertoman of the Year. Carol suggested
that we forward the Service to Mankind award winners on to the local
Mayors as potential candidates for a Mayor's Award. Carlin reminded the
Board that the Sertoman of the Year should also be forwarded to the
District and Region as candidates for District or Regional Sertoman of the
Year.
Carol suggested that the Club consider holding the 2003 Pancake fundraiser
at the Broom Factory.
Paula read a letter from Tommy Brush, Sertoma International President -
congratulating the Cedar Valley
Sertoma Club on increasing membership.
Paula also read a letter from the Waterloo Fire & Rescue requesting
club funding for smoke detectors for those with hearing difficulties. The
Board recommended supporting these requests on a case by case basis -
provided the Waterloo Fire Dept. plays an active role in the inventory,
maintenance, and storage of these devices (e.g. Waterloo Fire &
Rescue would keep track of
where and when a specialized smoke detector is needed in a particular
dwelling and remove the detector when it is no longer needed - and then
store the detector until it is needed elsewhere at some later date). It
was also agreed that a member of the Waterloo Fire & Rescue should be
invited to a meeting (possibly as a speaker) and that the club should
encourage the Waterloo Fire & Rescue to provide a new C.V. Sertoman from
within its ranks.
