1. The new Cedar Falls Sertoma Banner and stand was unfurled. Thanks goes to Donna Brown for attaching/sewing our latest awards to this banner. Lea Andersen will bring this banner to the upcoming Awards Banquet Sunday, February 25, 2001.
2. Lea and Cliff reported on the Valentines Day roll sale. Our club sold somewhere between 60-65 rolls which resulted in a net profit of ~ $250. Board members suggested that for this fund raising event we should start our efforts about three weeks in advance but if the Club intends to enlist the support of student groups on the UNI campus, these groups should be notified much earlier.
3. Board members suggested creating a brief - What-the-Cedar-Falls-Sertoma-Club-Does statement that could be used by Club fundraisers to quickly ask that eternal question So what does the Sertoma Club do?
4. Cliff and Carlin reported on impending changes for students of audiology. The national certifying agency for audiologists announced that soon students must have a Doctorate in Audiology to be certified. This change in certification requirements will place greater demands on the UNI Department of Communicative Disorders http://www.uni.edu/comdis/index.html. Cliff announced that the UNI Department of Communicative Disorders may well need to add at least two more faculty members and at least one more professional staff member to meet the demands of a doctoral program in audiology.
5. The Board agreed to donate $250 to both the local Boy Scout and Girl Scout councils.
6. Rick Koch has graciously agreed to chair this years Foursome Golf Outing fundraiser. Tickets will be $30 and include a steak dinner with unlimited beverages (pop or beer). Rick announced that he will likely schedule the event for Sunday, May 20th at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.
7. Lea Anderson distributed copies of the Treasurers Report for January 2001.
8. Carlin presented his proposal for establishing a Fly-the-American-Flag fundraiser. His findings:
Cost of flags (3x5) is negotiable and would depend on number of flags ordered and the quality of make and material. Without taking into account discounts for ordering in quantity flag costs range from $9.95 - $19.95.
Cost of 10 PVC Pipe to be used to construct the flag-stand/anchor and flagpole depends on thickness and quantity ordered. Generally the prices range from: $3.49 (for 1 ¼), to $4.29 (for 1 ¾), to $4.89 (for 2).
Thus an estimate of cost per flag-set-up ranges from $14.44 to $24.44.
The Board agreed to initiate this program.
Initially the Club should obtain permission from the city to place PVC flag-stand/anchors and flags in the parking areas closest to the curb in front of each house. The Board nominated Bob Robinson in recognition of his persuasive prowess to serve a contact and diplomat to the city for this task.
To more effectively initiate this program ALL Cedar Falls Sertoma Club members are asked to identify neighborhood organizations, associations, and block groups that could be targeted for this Fly-the-American-Flag fundraiser. In addition Darla will contact the local Chambers of Commerce and local realty agencies.
Each participant would purchase a $25 annual contract with the Club to have a flag-stand/anchor placed near their curb and to have the Club place a flag-pole and raise an American Flag at their curbside during the following holidays:
Memorial Day 4th of July Labor Day
The Club would also take down and store the flags.
Carlin also noted that Club members may wish to target businesses and cemeteries for veterans.
The club would create a brochure that would include contract details, the aforementioned What-the-Cedar-Falls-Sertoma-Club-Does statement, and perhaps sample pictures of similar projects in Texas.
Once again the Cedar Falls Sertoma Club Board would like to Lea Anderson for providing a delightful location to meet and such scrumptious snacks.
Respectfully submitted,
Chris Neuhaus
