Present: Cliff Highnam (presiding), Joe Alemao, Lloyd Berry, Donna Brown, Carol Cooper, Carlin Hageman, Tom Keel, Chris Neuhaus, Bill Robinson, Darren Winkowitsch

1. Cliff Highnam brought the meeting to order.

2. Lloyd Berry presented the Treasurer’s report (October 18 to November 19, 2001).   Lloyd noted the club received yet another donation of $25 from Bill Jochumsen, the 1995 "Service to Mankind" award winner.  Lloyd announced that the International Dues for this quarter were $218.50. The balance in the General Account is now $1,590.33.  The balance in the Sponsorship Account is now $3,287.31.  Carlin Hageman moved the acceptance of this report. Bill Robinson provided a  2nd. Motion to accept passed.

3. Chris Neuhaus reviewed the minutes from the previous Board Meeting – October 18, 2001 – posted at - http://www.uni.edu/neuhaus/sertoma/minutes/october2001.html.   Tom Keel moved the acceptance of the minutes.  Carlin Hageman provided a 2nd.   Motion to accept passed.

4. Donna Brown discussed the club name change (from Cedar Falls Sertoma Club to Cedar Valley Sertoma Club).  Donna announced that the staff Director Steve Murphy has given his blessing along with District Governor Carlin Hageman.International Director (Great Plains) Sheila Reding did voice support for this at the recent Iowa District meeting, but has not yet replied with an official approval.

5. The Board discussed our pending donation to the Sy Gau Scholarship Fund. Donna has not received a response from Tim Hazel yet as to when the next donation to this fund is due from the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club, it was agreed that the Club would - if feasible -  make this donation during the next quarter.

6. Donna Brown announced (via Judith Harrington) that both Carol Cooper and Lloyd Berry have put forward candidates for the "Service to Mankind" award.  Nominations will remain open into January, 2002.

7. Carol also reminded the Board that the Sertoma Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2002 (note from the secretary - Judy "banquet organizer extraordinaire" Harrington stated that this banquet will be held at the Broom Factory - see November Newsletter).  Carol Cooper reported that requests for essays - for the Club's "National Heritage Essay Contest" - where given to Peet Junior High, Holmes Junior High, and to the Lab School.  Carol noted that to date we have received six "What Freedom Means to Me" essays from Peet, none from Holmes (with perhaps none expected), and none from the Lab School (with perhaps quite a number expected).   Due to the poor response Carol recommended that the Club consider a different venue (perhaps artwork) for next years contest.

8. Tom Keel noted that Rachel Folland has called a meeting of the Valentine Bun Committee for Tuesday, December 18.

9. Carol Cooper asked the Board to ponder the acquisition of a credit card processing system to expedite future fundraising ventures that involve phone-in orders.

10. Carlin Hageman and Cliff Highnam would like to take the final steps necessary to begin a Flag Fundraiser next year.  Carlin stated that most everything is in place for this project.  Continued discussion on this issue will take place at future board meetings.

11. Carol Cooper put forth a fundraising idea called "Parachute Bingo" - a fundraising idea from William Stier's "More Fantastic Fundraisers for Sport and Recreation."

12. Donna Brown asked Treasurer Lloyd Berry to meet with Sid Morris of the Senior Center to discuss a donation to the Senior Center.   The Board mulled over other potential sites for next year's Pancake Breakfast - as the Senior Center may well be unavailable for this event next year.  Potential sites suggested for the Pancake Breakfast included the Am Vets hall, the American Legion hall, and some local churches.

13. Carlin announced that he and Ken Bleile would like the Club to consider sponsoring a UNI Collegiate Sertoma Club.  Carlin pointed out that while there would be some financial obligation from our Cedar Valley Sertoma Club to this UNI Collegiate Sertoma Club that assistance in fundraising from these new and energetic members during joint club projects would easily offset our financial contributions.

14. Donna Brown announced that the next Board Meeting will take place on Thursday, January 10, 2002.  The next Business Meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 15, 2002.

15. The Board thanks Donna and Gary Brown for hosting the Board Meetings this fall - and for supplying the very delicious food and beverages so requisite for a well functioning Board.
