Cedar Valley Sertoma Club
Business Meeting – Minutes
Tuesday, November 20, 2001

Present:   Donna Brown (presiding), Joe Alemao, Lea Andersen, Lloyd Berry, Gary Brown (guest), Angie Burda, Carol Cooper, Rachel Folland, Cliff Highnam, Linda Janssen, Tom Keel, Chris Neuhaus, Paula Padavich, Bill Robinson, Bob Robinson, Bob Sheridan, and Ed Smith.

1. Paula Padavich presented a check from the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club for $239.25 for the national Disaster Relief Fund to Scott Dix and Curt Hildebrand from the Cedar Falls Fire Department.  It was noted - that with individual member's contributions -   over $1,000 has been given to various help organizations following the Sept. 11 attack.  Scott Dix answered a number of questions from members of the club concerning identification of hazardous materials, inspections, and the high incidence of cancer among fire fighting personnel.  Club members and firemen alike agreed that the current staffing levels at the Cedar Falls Fire Department were less than desirable and that as the town grows the support for the Cedar Falls Fire Department will need to grow as well.

2. Cliff Highnam moved - with a 2nd from Tom Keel - that the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club should provide a $50 Christmas certificate to our most excellent (and long suffering) Broom Factory waitress Toni Gleason.  After some discussion Lea Anderson moved that we increase the gift from $50 to $75, Cliff Highnam provided a 2nd, the motion passed. Lloyd Berry will purchase a gift certificate from College Square Mall.

3. Donna Brown presented the following personal and club awards to past-president Cliff Highnam:

The Silver Award for Sertoma Club Achievement 2000-2001
The Bronze Honor Club Award 2000-2001

4.  Donna Brown, Paula Padavich, and Chris Neuhaus recounted their adventures at the very recent East-West Iowa Fall District Conference held in Ames on Sunday, November 18th.

5. Donna Brown noted that the Junior Commissioner Program http://lserver.aea14.k12.ia.us/swp/tadkins/i-can/dsci-jc.html of the Iowa Deaf Services Commission may soon be suffering for want of funding. Bill Robinson moved that the funding to this program from the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club be increased from $750 to $1000, Tom Keel provided a 2nd, the motion passed.

6. Lloyd Berry distributed copies of the Club budget and the Treasurer’s report. Lloyd asked that the club review its sponsorship commitments.

7. There was some discussion concerning the timing of the Cedar Valley Sertoma Club's $1000 contribution to the Sy Gau Award which has been budgeted for this year.  Donna Brown will investigate whether this contribution is to be paid this year or next.

8. Donna Brown asked that club members consider contributing some of their time to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank by helping with gift-wrapping at College Square Mall between December 1 and December 24.   To sign up call the Northeast Iowa Food Bank http://www.northeastiowafoodbank.org/fbspecialevents.htm at 235-0507 ext 103 or call Donna Brown at 277-4519.

9. Donna Brown reminded club members to invite guests (potential members) to our meetings - with special emphasis on past Waterloo Sertoma Club members.
