DICTIONARIES AND ENCYCLOPEDIAS

Dictionary of Education
UNI Reference LB 15 G6 1973; Earlier in UNI Stacks
Although an older resource, this title is still considered to be the basic educational dictionary. It contains about 33,000 entries and cross-references.

Facts on File Dictionary of Education
UNI Reference LB 15 S43 1988
A handy reference source that covers educational terminology as well as many organizations. Can be understood by laypersons.

The Language of Learning: A Guide to Education Terms
UNI Reference LB 15 M32 1997
A basic dictionary of educational terminology.

Encyclopedia of American Education
UNI Reference LB 17 U54 1996
This 3-volume set contains 2,500 entries defining and explaining terms of importance in American education. These include biographical entries, definitions of educational terminology, descriptions of organizations and colleges and universities, as well as summaries of important legal cases.

The Encyclopedia of Education
UNI Reference LB 15 E47
This comprehensive 10 volume work contains over 1,000 lengthy articles (arranged alphabetically) on diverse topics such as school administration, comparative education, curriculum, history of education, teacher training, and career education. Some biographical information is included.

The International Encyclopedia of Education
UNI Reference LB 15 I569 1994
This well-designed international multi-volume work contains over 1,200 articles signed by contributors from more than 95 countries. The articles cover 22 major fields, including curriculum, educational technology, instructional psychology, and philosophy of education. Systems of education in 160 countries are presented (including charts and tables).

World Education Encyclopedia
UNI Reference LB 15 W87 1988
Describes the national educational systems of most countries around the world. Arranged by major, middle, and minor countries. For a description of higher education systems, see Handbook of World Education (UNI Reference LB 43 H36 1991).

Encyclopedia of Educational Research
UNI Reference Desk LB 15 E48 1992; Earlier in UNI Stacks
This multi-volume set contains signed articles on educational topics arranged under broad subject categories. Articles summarize and interpret important research on the topics under discussion.

There are also a number of more specialized encyclopedias in the field of education. Some of them are: Encyclopedia of Special Education (UNI Reference LC 4007 E53 1987), International Encyclopedia of Higher Education (UNI Reference LB 15 I57), International Encyclopedia of Curriculum (UNI Reference LB 1570 I5676 1991), and International Encyclopedia of Educational Evaluation (UNI Reference LB 2822.75 I57 1990).

An alphabetical listing, with addresses, of about 600,000 teaching faculty at junior colleges, colleges, and universities in the United States and some selected Canadian institutions.

Patterson's Elementary Education

A comprehensive, national directory to elementary education. Contains addresses of public as well as private elementary schools.

Patterson's American Education

A comprehensive, national directory to public and private secondary schools. Covers middle, junior high, and senior high schools.

Iowa Educational Directory
UNI Reference & UNI Reference Desk L 903 I6I6 (most recent); Earlier in UNI Stacks
A listing of Iowa public elementary, junior high and high schools arranged by school district. Also includes an alphabetical listing of private schools and a directory of the area education agencies.

QED's State School Guide. Iowa
UNI Reference Desk L 903 I8S36 (most recent); Earlier in UNI Stacks
A directory of all public and non-public K-12 schools in Iowa, arranged by county. Contains information not included in the Iowa Educational Directory. QED school guides for selected other states, in particular the Midwestern states, can also be found in the Library's Reference collection.

Educational Directories is a microfiche set of school directories for each state. It is located in the microfiche file cabinet near the UNI Reference Desk. For information about colleges and universities see the separate Library User's Guide entitled College and University Directories.

The Library has several directories outlining teacher certification requirements in the states. They are: Requirements for Certification of Teachers, Counselors, Librarians, Administrators for Elementary and Secondary Schools (UNI Reference LB 1771 W6), Teacher Certification Requirements in all Fifty States (UNI Reference LB 1771 T43), and Manual on Certification and Preparation of Educational Personnel in the United States and Canada (UNI Reference LB 1771 N37).

Digest of Education Statistics

This annual publication abstracts statistical information about American education on all levels from preschool through graduate programs.

The Condition of Education
UNI Documents ED 1.109:; Library has: 1975-
This annual summary of American education covers statistics on current conditions, issues, and trends. Contains many graphs and charts.

Mental Measurements Yearbook

A very important tool for educational researchers, the yearbooks contain descriptions and reviews of educational and psychological tests and measurements.

Review of Research in Education
UNI Reference LB 1028 R43; Library has: 1973-
Each annual volume contains review essays on specific topics in education. Each essay is followed by a lengthy bibliography.

Directory of American Scholars

Contains brief biographical sketches of U.S. and Canadian scholars actively teaching, researching, and publishing in the humanities.

Biographical Dictionary of American Educators
UNI Reference LA 2311 B54
This multi-volume dictionary contains biographical sketches of 1,665 influential American educators from colonial times to America's bicentennial.

Biographical Dictionary of Modern American Educators
UNI Reference LA 2311 O55 1997
This book continues Biographical Dictionary of American Educators and contains entries on American educators who shaped education in the early and middle decades of the 20th century.

Who's Who in American Education
UNI Reference LA 2311 W47 (most recent); Earlier in UNI Stacks
The volume contains brief biographies and, in many instances addresses, of contemporary educators, administrators, and educational officials at the state, university and college, and elementary and secondary education levels. For biographies of earlier educators consult the 23-volume Who's Who in American Education published between 1928 and 1968 (UNI Stacks LA 2311 W45).

ERIC is a comprehensive database which covers all areas of education. CIJE indexes and abstracts articles from about 800 education and related journals. RIE indexes and abstracts documents such as research reports, bibliographies, curricular materials, and conference papers. The documents are available on microfiche in the Microforms Area. When searching the ERIC system use the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (UNI Index/Abstract L 112 E38 and online, URL http://www.library.uni.edu) to find appropriate subject terms. A free Internet version of ERIC (1989- ) is available at http://ericir.syr.edu.

UNI Index/Abstract L 11 E27 Library has: 1929-
Covers all areas of education and indexes about 400 English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and monographs in series. The electronic version contains abstracts and, for recent years, the full text of articles from almost 200 journals and magazines. There is a substantial overlap with CIJE. However, the full-text feature and the number of journals only indexed in this abstract make it worthwhile searching it in addition to CIJE.

This resource indexes and abstracts articles from about 1,300 journals and book chapters in the area of psychology and related behavioral and social sciences.

Exceptional Child Education Resources
UNI Index/Abstract LC 3950 E9 Library has: 1969-
Provides abstracts of journal articles, books, dissertations, and other publications related to all aspects of educating children with disabilities. Also covers gifted education. Many of the abstracted materials are also indexed in the ERIC database.

Higher Education Abstracts
UNI Index/Abstract LB 2343 C6137 Library has: 1965- (formerly College Student Personnel Abstracts)
Abstracts articles relating to higher education from some 120 journals as well as some conference papers. Arrangement is by broad subject categories.
