1996-97 (Senior): Seeded
fifth, he finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships,
earning his second consecutive NCAA berth…Avenged
a recent dual meet loss when he defeated fourth seed
and 8th-ranked Ben Nachtrieb of Indiana, 3-2, in
the quarterfinals, scoring a takedown in the closing
seconds of the bout for the win…Down 2-1 versus seventh
seed Shelton Benjamin of Minnesota in the consolation
bracket semifinals, he was slammed trying to escape
during the final moments of the bout and was knocked
unconscious briefly. He suffered a concussion during
the exchange and, unable to continue, was awarded
the match on a disqualification, but was also forced
to sit out the third place match on Sunday…Resurfaced
in the national rankings last week in the No. 8 spot
after falling out of the polls for several weeks
while rehabilitationg an injury during January…Began
the season ranked sixth nationally in the heavyweight
division and was eighth in the Dec. 18 poll…Wrestled
with an injured knee early in the season, posting
an 8-5 record, before electing to have arthroscopic
surgery Jan. 6…Returned to the mat against 21st-ranked
Purdue Feb. 1 and scored a 5-3 decision against the
Boilermakers’ David Pierce, giving the Buckeyes an
18-16 dual victory…Went 7-3 to close the regular
season, with his three losses coming against Big
Ten nationally-ranked heavyweights, No. 6 Airron
Richardson of Michigan , No. 8 Ben Nachtrieb of Indiana
and No. 1 Kerry McCoy of Penn State…Placed second
at the Oregon Classic in December…During the summer,
he won the heavyweight division at the University
Freestyle Championships and finished fourth at the
Olympic Trials.
1995-96 (Junior): Posted a 33-12
record…Finished seventh at the NCAA Championships,
earning All-America status…Was 5-2 at the NCAA’s…Needed
to upset Seth Brady of Illinois to become an All-American
and pinned him in 1:36…Defeated Pat Wiltanger of
Pittsburgh, 2-0, in the seventh-place match, as Nutter
rode Wiltanger all two minutes of the second period
and scored an escape in the third period…Upset seventh-
ranked and third-seeded Airron Richardson of Michigan
to place fifth at the Big Ten championships…Tied
for first for wins with 33…Was seventh at the Michigan
Open and sixth at the Las Vegas Invitational . .
. Last nine losses came against top 10 wrestlers…8-4
in matches decided by one point…Had 59 takedowns
and a third-best 91.5 team points…Led team with 77
back points and seven pins…Named the team’s Most
Improved Wrestler.
1994-95 (Sophomore): Followed
up a solid freshman campaign with another good year…Was
14-11 and earned 50 team points…Entered the Big Ten
Championships as the fourth seed but did not place
after going 1-2…Was 6-5 in Big Ten matches…Third
on the team in reversals with 11.
1993-94 (Freshman):
Had an 18-18 record as a freshman with a 13-12 record
in dual matches.
1992-93: Redshirted.
High
School: State champion as a senior and runner-up
his junior year…Won the national high school wrestling
championship as a senior…Also took the Asics junior
national championships in both the freestyle and
Greco-Roman divisions…Was all-state in football at
Buckeye High School.
Personal: Born 6-8-74 …Son
of Jack and Gail Nutter…Father was his high school
coach and was recently named the state coach of the
year in Division II…Majoring in sociology.

Hellickson says: “Nick could compete at both 190
and heavyweight. He is the best thrower on the team
and has lots of unorthodox techniques and a tremendous
defense. ”
