1996-97 (Sophomore): Seeded fifth, he placed sixth at the Big Ten Championships for the second consecutive season, earning an NCAA berth for the second straight year…Went 2-3 at the Big Tens, including recording the Buckeyes’ fastest fall of the season when he pinned Michigan’s Frank Lodeserto in just 31 seconds…His other win at the conference meet was a 7-2 decision against Wisconsin’s Aaron Stark…Was Ohio State’s starter at 190 pounds for the second consecutive season…Enters the national tourney as the team leader in takedowns with 95…Was ranked eighth in the nation during two separate polling periods in ’97, but was unranked in the final poll…Was 4-5 in Big Ten duals…Has wrestled eight opponents that are currently nationally-ranked and 13 different opponentsonce or more who have spent time in the rankings during the season…Won the 190-pound title at the Oregon Classic, beating eighth-ranked Rusty Cook of Boise State, 10-6, in the final match…Defeated 10th-ranked Sam Neider of Northwestern, 6-5, helping the Buckeyes to a Big Ten dual victory, Feb. 7…Finished second at the Michigan Open.
1995-96 (Freshman): Posted a 17-18 record for the squad… After winning his first NCAA match, 10-3, over Matthew McRoberts of Boston U., lost to the eventual NCAA Champion, John Kading of Oklahoma…Was 3-3 and finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships leading the team with 13 takedowns…Took over at 190 pounds after a redshirt year…77 takedowns was third on the team…Had 48 team
points.
1994-95: Redshirted due to of a knee injury.
High School: Put an exclamation point on an outstanding two-sport athletic career by pinning his opponent in 1:37 to capture the 189-pound national high school championship… Placed first in state his junior and senior seasons…State runner-up as a sophomore…Also starred on the gridiron where as an all-state halfback and rewrote the Springfield record book for points (372), all-purpose yards (5,278), rushing yards (3,939) and touchdowns (58)…Garnered seven separate Player of the Year awards including honors from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Akron Beacon-Journal and the Dapper Dan Club…His football jersey number, 26, was retired in 1995.
Personal: Born 10-23-75…Son of Vera Gary…Majoring in communications…Third cousin of Evander Holyfield…In free time, serves as mentor for young wrestlers and football players…Enjoys lifting weights.
