FLU PREVENTION TIPS:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are anticipating an active influenza season this fall and winter. NORTHERN IOWAN DELIVERY CART MISSING:The Northern Iowan's push cart for delivering newspapers on campus is missing. The cart has a blue handle and wood platform. OSHA BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN TRAINING:This 50-minute training is required for all students completing field experiences in any pre-K through 12 school setting. The training is free and open to anyone. Three sessions will be offered: 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8; 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9; or 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10. All sessions will be held in SEC 244/245. No registration is required. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT CF LUTHERAN HOME:Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 19, to assist the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home with the Promise 5K run/walk and 10K run. Volunteers will help with race-route guidance, registration, timing, pictures, kids' events and more. Volunteers age 16 and older are welcome. PAID TUTORING POSITIONS AVAILABLE:The student support services program and academic achievement and retention services are hiring tutors to assist students, with particular need in the areas of natural science and business. Tutoring sessions will begin immediately following hiring and employment will last through this semester or beyond. The sessions may be individual or small group. Applicants should have completed entry-level courses in one or more of these areas, earning a grade of B or above in the specific courses for which they would provide tutoring. EVENTS (BY CATEGORY):SPECIAL EVENTS:'EXECUTION OF JUSTICE' AUDITIONS:Auditions for "Execution of Justice" will take place at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8 and Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the Interpreters Theatre (LNG 040.) "Execution of Justice" takes a look into the trial of Dan White for the murder of Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and one of the most controversial verdicts of the 20th century. Roles are available for eight to 12 men and six women as well as technicians/crew. No preparation or prior experience is needed to audition. The show will run Oct. 21 - 24. WRITING STUDIES BROWN BAG DISCUSSION:Attend a monthly discussion about writing and writing instruction at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, in BAK 161. Discussions will cover the state of writing studies, literacy, composition/ rhetoric, and the role of writing with respect to education in a collaborative environment. This month's subject is Chris Anson's article, "The Intelligent Design of Writing Programs: Reliance on Belief or a Future of Evidence." WPA: Writing Program Administration 32.1 (2008): 11-36. Bring a camera and learn about the beautiful native plants of the Iowa grasslands and their importance to the wildlife they support. Register by Monday, Sept. 14; the cost is $3 per person.
LECTURES/WORKSHOPS:GRADUATE COLLEGE BROWN BAG LECTURE SERIES:Professor Roy Behrens, professor of art and the recipient of the 2009-2010 UNI Distinguished Scholar award, will present "Unearthing Art and Camouflage: My Research on the Fence Between Art and Science" at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the ITTC Studio 1 and 2. The presentation is a slide-illustrated account of more than 40 years of research of the contributions to Modern-era camouflage (both biological and military) of artists, architects, scientists and others, a project that resulted in articles, books, exhibits and films. Coffee and cookies will be served.
ELEVATOR PITCH WORKSHOP:An Elevator Pitch Workshop will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9, in BCS 33. This workshop is intended for students interested in competing in the Elevator Pitch Competition to be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The winner of the competition will automatically advance to the national competition to be held at the National CEO Conference in Chicago on Oct. 22 - 24.
