VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP:

Volunteers are needed to staff Waterloo elementary schools for Kindergarten Round-Up from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m, Friday, April 17 to assist with a computer test that the parent and child will complete. For more information, e-mail volunteerUNI@vccv.org.

ACADEMIC BUILDING FIRE ALARM TESTING:

During the week of March 16, all academic building smoke detectors, heat detectors and pull stations will be inspected and tested. As a result, you may hear an intermittent fire alarm siren. This is a result of the testing procedure and is not notification of fire. If the alarm goes off and is a steady alarm sound, this is a valid fire alarm and evacuation of the building should start immediately. Contact Darrell Hansen at 273-2004 with questions.

FACEBOOK SURVEY - WIN A Wii:

Complete a survey about what students feel the purpose of Facebook is and be entered into a drawing for a free Wii. The survey will take about five minutes to complete and will be available until March 15. This survey is part of an honors program thesis. COMPLETE NSSE SURVEY:

If you received a letter inviting you to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), look for the survey in your UNI e-mail. Completing the survey gives students the opportunity to share their experiences at UNI. Students who complete the survey will also be entered in a prize drawing. PARK AND RIDE SERVICE TO END:

The Park and Ride service will end at the end of the day, Friday, March 13, due to low ridership. The project has not been cost effective and current numbers don't indicate a substantial change that would allow the service to continue. MERCHANT SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED:

Merchant Scholarships are awarded on the basis of ability, achievement, character, potential and service to society. LEARN ABOUT MAJORS IN MINUTES:

Attend Majors in Minutes, a speed-dating approach to learning more about majors/minors of interest, from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 9, in the Commons Ballroom (arrive anytime between 7 and 8 p.m.). CARVER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION HELP:

Stop by for information and help applying for a Carver Scholarship from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, or from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, in GIL 113. Recipients of the 2009-10 Carver Scholarship have overcome difficult circumstances to pursue their education. Twenty new UNI recipients will be selected to receive a $5,200 award. To qualify, students must meet the following criteria: junior by fall 2009; minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA; currently enrolled as a sophomore at a participating four-year institution or one of Iowa's community colleges; U.S. citizen; graduated from an accredited Iowa high school or have been a resident of Iowa for the past five years; demonstrate financial need by filing a 2009-10 FAFSA by mid March. INTERNSHIPS WITH DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE:

Internships are available with U.S. Department of Defense Child Development Centers in Germany, Italy, England, Belgium, Hawaii or Florida for fall 2009. Travel, housing and a living stipend are paid. The internship includes 12 credit hours (undergraduate or graduate) from UNI. VISITING MONKS TO BUILD SAND MANDALA:

Four Tibetan monks from the University of Arkansas Tibetan Cultural Institute will construct a sand mandala April 13-19 in the lobby of the GBPAC. A mandala is an intricate geometric pattern made from colored sand, grain by grain, representing Buddha and acting as a guide for meditation. TREATS FOR TROOPS BAKE SALE:

"Treats for Troops," a social work student project, will hold a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, March 9, in Mauker Union. EARTH SCIENCE SEMINAR:

Bill Desmarais will speak on "A Tale of Two Pachyrhinosaurus: Discovery of a New Ceratopsian Dinosaur" at 4 p.m., Monday, March 9, in LAT 125. Desmarais works with Canadian Paleontologist Phil Currie and will describe their work in the field and in the lab at the University of Alberta. The presentation is free and open to the public. NATURAL RESOURCE RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT SEMINAR:

Jennifer Wahl will discuss "Biomass, Mineral Content and Winter Phenology of Nine Tallgrass Prairie Forbs" at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 11, at the Tallgrass Prairie Center. Wahl's work is part of The Prairie Power Project, which investigates mixtures of prairie species for biomass production. CITIZEN SCIENCE ON SATURDAYS:

Alan Czarnetzki, professor of meteorology, and Jeff Kennedy, KWWL meteorologist, will present the fourth installment of the Citizen Science series at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 28, in the CEEE auditorium. They will review current recommendations for safety during tornadoes, lightning and flash floods. The series, open to the public and free of charge, is intended to make the technical accessible.

NORTHWIND QUINTET CONCERT:

The Northwind Quintet will offer a spring recital at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, in Bengtson Auditorium, Russell Hall, featuring UNI School of Music faculty artists Tom Barry, oboe, Amanda McCandless, clarinet, David Rachor, bassoon, and Yu-Ting Su, horn, with guest artist Dominique Cawley, flute. DOUBLE BASS RECITAL:

Visiting artist Dennis Whittaker, double bass, will present a recital at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, in Graham Hall, Russell Hall. Whittaker has performed with several prominent symphony orchestras throughout the United States. This event is free and open to the public.

PIANO RECITAL:

Visiting artist Jeongwon Ham, piano, will offer a recital at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, in Davis Hall, GBPAC. She has won numerous piano competitions, including the Bartók/Kabalevsky International Piano Competition, and has performed internationally. This event is free and open to the public.

NORTHERN IOWA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA:

Under the direction of conductor Rebecca Burkhardt, the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra will offer a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 26, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. For tickets, call 273-4TIX.

DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL:

The UNI Interpreters Theatre will present "Daddy's Little Girl," followed by "The Mating Game," at 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, March 26 - 28, in LNG 040. Admission is free, 90 people will be admitted per show on a first-come, first-served basis. This production is intended for mature audiences; it contains strong language and sexual situations.

GUEST ARTIST MASTER CLASS:

Visiting artist Dennis Whittaker will offer a double bass master class to School of Music students at 10 a.m., Friday, March 27, in Graham Hall, Russell Hall. Whittaker graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor University, and with a Master's of Music from Northwestern University, and has performed with several prominent symphony orchestras throughout the United States. This event is free and open to the public.

WELLNESS/RECREATION:

SPRING BREAK ADVENTURE WITH UNI OUTDOORS:

Join UNI Outdoors March 13 through 22 in Georgia for backpacking in Cumberland National Seashore, canoeing in Okefenokee Swamp and hiking the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The fee is $500 for students, $525 for UNI employees and $575 for guests. Call 273-7164 for more information.

INTRAMURAL BENCH PRESS COMPETITION:

An intramural bench press competition will take place at 7:05 p.m., Monday, March 30, in the WRC 153 (Free Weight Room). Weigh-in will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. and warm-up will start 15 minutes prior to the competition. Entry for this event will take place at the time of weigh-in. Open to men and women. INTRAMURAL BADMINTON:

An intramural badminton competition, open to men, women and co-rec, will be held at the WRC South Courts. Men's/women's singles will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, men's/women's doubles will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, and the co-rec competition will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 25. Chats customers can get free coffee at Chats from 8 to 10 a.m. during spring break. Maucker Union restaurants and stores will be closed from Saturday, March 14 through Sunday, March 22, for construction. Residence dining at Towers and Redeker Centers and food carts in Schindler, Curris and WRC will also be closed Saturday, March 14 through Sunday, March 22. The 23rd Street Market in Commons and Biscotti's at Redeker will reopen at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 22.
