VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP:Volunteers are needed to staff Waterloo elementary schools for Kindergarten Round-Up from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m, Friday, April 17 to assist with a computer test that the parent and child will complete. ACADEMIC BUILDING FIRE ALARM TESTING:During the week of March 16, all academic building smoke detectors, heat detectors and pull stations will be inspected and tested. As a result, you may hear an intermittent fire alarm siren. This is a result of the testing procedure and is not notification of fire. If the alarm goes off and is a steady alarm sound, this is a valid fire alarm and evacuation of the building should start immediately. Contact Darrell Hansen at 273-2004 with questions.
FACEBOOK SURVEY - WIN A Wii:Complete a survey about what students feel the purpose of Facebook is and be entered into a drawing for a free Wii. The survey will take about five minutes to complete and will be available until March 15. This survey is part of an honors program thesis. COMPLETE NSSE SURVEY:If you received a letter inviting you to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), look for the survey in your UNI e-mail. Completing the survey gives students the opportunity to share their experiences at UNI. Students who complete the survey will also be entered in a prize drawing. PARK AND RIDE SERVICE TO END:The Park and Ride service will end at the end of the day, Friday, March 13, due to low ridership. The project has not been cost effective and current numbers don't indicate a substantial change that would allow the service to continue. LEARN ABOUT MAJORS IN MINUTES:Attend Majors in Minutes, a speed-dating approach to learning more about majors/minors of interest, from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 9, in the Commons Ballroom (arrive anytime between 7 and 8 p.m.). Students interested in a major will visit with senior students in that major for five minutes. After five minutes, they can remain at that station or move to another. Refreshments will be provided. CARVER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION HELP:Stop by for information and help applying for a Carver Scholarship from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, or from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, in GIL 113. Recipients of the 2009-10 Carver Scholarship have overcome difficult circumstances to pursue their education. Twenty new UNI recipients will be selected to receive a $5,200 award. To qualify, students must meet the following criteria: junior by fall 2009; minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA; currently enrolled as a sophomore at a participating four-year institution or one of Iowa's community colleges; U.S. citizen; graduated from an accredited Iowa high school or have been a resident of Iowa for the past five years; demonstrate financial need by filing a 2009-10 FAFSA by mid March. INTERNSHIPS WITH DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE:Internships are available with U.S. Department of Defense Child Development Centers in Germany, Italy, England, Belgium, Hawaii or Florida for fall 2009. Travel, housing and a living stipend are paid. The internship includes 12 credit hours (undergraduate or graduate) from UNI. A mandala is an intricate geometric pattern made from colored sand, grain by grain, representing Buddha and acting as a guide for meditation. All proceeds will go towards shipping costs to send care packages to 140 members of the Waterloo 211th Aviation Unit, currently serving in Iraq. SPRINT INTO SPRING 5K:The 8th Annual PSE 5K run/walk will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 18. Raffle prizes will be given from supporting companies.
