NEWS

STUDENT SERVICES MOVE TO THE UNION:

Public Safety (parking permits), Business Operations (cashier) and ITS - Consulting Center (computer password re-sets) will be offered in Maucker Union, Aug. 17 through 21. Click here for more information: http://www.uni.edu/maucker/weekendservices.shtml

 

DEPT. OF ACADEMIC SERVICES HAS MOVED:

The Department of Academic Services has moved to 007 ITTC (formerly the East Gym). Services include examination services, computer-based testing, reading and learning strategies and athletic academic advising. The telephone number and UNI zip code remain the same.

 

CENTER FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT HAS MOVED:

The Center for Academic Achievement, Student Support Services, and the McNair Scholars Program moved from East Bartlett Hall to the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC) Room 007 (formerly East Gym). All phone numbers and mail codes remain the same.

 

DIVERSITY WEEK DEADLINE FOR STUDENT GROUPS:

Chaired by the Center for Multicultural Education, UNI's Annual Diversity Week will be Sept. 11-15 this year. If your student group would like to have an event added to the Diversity Week calendar and posters, submit location, date, time and a short description of the event to Lydia.Roberts@uni.edu by Wednesday, Aug. 23.

 

JUMP START ORIENTATION:

The Ninth Annual UNI Jump Start Orientation Program is scheduled for Aug. 13 through 18. The program assists ethnically diverse students in making a smooth transition to UNI. Help welcome the Jump Start participants during the week. For more information contact the Office of Admissions at 273-2281.

Curriculum Library and computer labs will re-open Aug. 21 at 7:45 a.m.

 

WRC HOURS:

The WRC will re-open Monday, Aug. 14, at 6 a.m. Fall hours begin Sunday, Aug. 20, from 3 -11 p.m. Health Beat in Maucker Union is closed. Health Beat re-opens on Monday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 a.m.

WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATION MAJORS:

Future classroom teachers - participate in "Building Character Through Found Objects" Friday, Sept. 29, 1 to 4 p.m. in SEC 303. Learn how to create an art assemblage using old junk and discover how the process can be used to help build students' self awareness, improve their learning performance, and build self worth. YOUNG PEOPLE'S DANCE THEATRE:

Young Peoples Dance Theatre (YPDT) is seeking students to offer dance to boys and girls in local elementary schools. Academic credit available: 420:059 11 Dance Experiences for Children. Meets Fridays, noon-12:50 p.m. plus arranged weekly dance session before- or after-school. Dance and/or teaching experience helpful but not required. EVENTS

PANTHER FAN FEST:

The third-annual Panther Fan Fest will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, in the UNI-Dome. Panther fans and families are invited to join the UNI Panther Athletic teams in kicking off the 2006-07 year. The event includes McLeod Center tours, inflatables and games, autographs, food vendors and a welcome from coaches and President Allen.

 

CONVOCATION:

Plan to attend the sixth annual Convocation ceremony Sunday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. in the GBPAC. This traditional event honors the beginning of the academic year and sets a tone of dedication to education by both students and faculty. President Benjamin J. Allen will preside.

 

PANTHER BASH:

The Panther Bash follows Convocation at 5 p.m. across from the GBPAC, near the Visitor Information Center. Both new and returning students are invited to celebrate their Panther pride with free T-shirts, free food and free entertainment. Music by local favorite, Sugarfoot. Sponsored by the UNI Alumni Association with support from the Student Alumni Ambassadors, Pepsi and Papa John's Pizza.

 

HYPNOTIST JIM WAND:

Dare to get hypnotized? You'll be laughing in the aisles. Hypnotist Jim Wand will perform two shows in the GBPAC, Saturday, Aug. 19, at 8 and 10 p.m. Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

 

MAUCKER UNION BBQ BLAST:

Come and enjoy free hotdogs, chips and soda on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Maucker Union Plaza. Free, live entertainment with acapella group Marcoux Corner. Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

 

KUNI'S LIVE FROM STUDIO ONE:

Rachel Ries, classically trained in voice, piano, violin and viola, will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in KUNI's third-floor studios. Admission is $3 at the door, free for children under 12.

 
FREE BBQ AT THE CME:

Your first day of class deserves a bash. Bring a friend and join us for a free BBQ dinner, sno cones, volleyball and music by DJ Mixxfactor, Monday, Aug. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Memorial Garden outside of Maucker Union. Sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Education.

 

POSTER SALES:

Need some new art for your walls? Come check out the huge selection of posters for sale Aug. 21-25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the Maucker Union Plaza. Rain site is inside Maucker Union.

 

KUNI HOSTS FREE CONCERT:

As part of UNI's Welcome Week, KUNI presents a free outdoor concert for students and live music fans alike Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adam Bolts of Cedar Falls' own The Beat Strings, Iowa City's Death Ships and Marion's The Wheelers are featured. The party will take place at the Mosaic Band Shell located on the south side of Russell Hall, near the corner of West 27th and Minnesota Streets, across from Hagemann and Rider Halls. This special event is made possible by the Friends of KUNI and Mohair Pear (on the hill in Cedar Falls). Rain date is Thursday, Aug. 24, from 5 - 8 p.m.

 

DRIVE-IN MOVIE FEATURING MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III:

Thursday, Aug. 24, Quads Courtyard at 9 p.m. Bring a blanket and some friends to enjoy this summer blockbuster under the stars. Free snacks and refreshments provided. In case of rain the event will be shown in Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom. Sponsored by Campus Activities Board.
