To perpetuate President Koob's vision for community-university partnerships, the UNI Foundation has created the Robert D. Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement. It will support internships for students working to better the community and UNI. The R.J. McElroy Trust has issued a challenge grant in support of the fund. UNI is considering constructing a transit system and parking ramp (multimodal system) to serve students, faculty, staff and visitors. UNI will hold a surplus equipment auction at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, in the Physics Bldg next to the West 23rd Street "A" parking lot. Community and Public Health (410:160) is a new course being offered for Capstone credit. The course will examine the major public health issues facing the U.S. and world population and investigate major public health initiatives, public policy and ethical issues related to public health. A new six-week summer speech and reading program will be offered from June 19 through July 27 at the Roy Eblen Speech and Hearing Center. Children must be enrolled for a minimum of one 60-minute session per week or two thirty-minute sessions per week and all sessions will be conducted by certified/licensed staff. Astronomy Laboratory (Natural History Workshop in Astronomy) Fundamentals of astronomical observation, the use of introductory astronomical instruments, and application of charts and almanacs to finding one's way about the night sky. Meets July 31 through Aug. 4. One credit hour (transferable). Natural History Workshop in Astronomy is equivalent to Astronomy Laboratory (870:011) at UNI, which fulfills the Laboratory Science requirement of UNI's Liberal Arts Core. It is assumed that each Astronomy Laboratory student has taken an introductory (lecture) course in astronomy, at either the high-school or college level. The UNI Gallery of Art will present its Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition in the KAB March 20 to April 17. "The Return" (2003), directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev, will be shown at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 in Seerley 115. "The Return" takes place in the remote Russian wilderness, and two teenage boys face a range of conflicting emotions when their father - a man they know only through a single photograph - reappears after 12 years.

Holmes Semken, of the University of Iowa, will talk about the excavation of a rare giant ground sloth in southern Iowa. This extinct animal lived in Iowa during the Ice Age. Semken will also have some of the animal's bones on display.

Brian Hynek, research associate at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, will give a presentation on "The latest research results from Mars" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, in Room 125 Latham Hall. Hynek's research involves the geology of Mars, and he is working with three of the current NASA missions on the red planet. Specifically, he has been studying the Meridiani hematite site by combining remote sensing data with ground truth from the Opportunity Rover.
