MyUNIverse
News is the official UNI news source for students. It is distributed
each Monday during the academic year by the office of University Marketing
and Public Relations. Information is also available on the MyUNIverse

Information presented will include announcements about campus programs,
financial aid, employment, building hours, student resources and events.

NEW AUTHENTICATION
SYSTEM FOR MYUNIVERSE: A new authentication
system is in place for access to MyUNIverse; administrative web applications
such as registration, residence contracting, parking permits, viewing
financial aid awards and U-bills; as well as login to computers in
the ITS Student Computer Centers. The new authentication system allows
you to use a login other than your social security number. Students
will use their UNI student number. You are also required to select
a new, longer password consisting of alpha, numeric, and special characters.
This is an effort by the University to increase the security of confidential
records and to maintain your privacy.

CASHIER HOURS/LOCATIONS
AUGUST 21-25: The
Cashier's Office will operate out of two locations during the "Move
to the Union 2003" portion of "Welcome Week '03". For

NEW AND IMPROVED MAUCKER UNION: On
Aug. 22, Maucker Union will re-open for business! Chats, the new coffee
bar, opens at 7 a.m. The Coffee House, Hemisphere Lounge, new and
renovated meeting rooms, and the administrative offices for Maucker
Union will also be open. Temporary food service will be in Old Central
Ballroom C (formerly the Expansion) beginning on Aug. 25. For more

TAG SALE: On
Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., UNI will have a tag sale
at the UNI warehouse, 2412 West 27th St. -- west of the UNI-Dome.
A large variety of chairs and seating units will be available, as
well as desks, files, podiums, and a few bicycles. All
items are specifically priced for sale. All items are sold "as
is" and must be removed by 4 p.m. on Thursday. All items must
be paid for in cash (good check) on site before removal. Please call

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE:
Missouri Street Reconstruction: Beginning Monday
Aug. 18, Missouri Street between the Gilchrist G parking lot and Latham
Hall will be closed for reconstruction.The anticipated time to complete
this work is three to four weeks.
The Gilchrist G lot and the Latham metered lot will be closed during
construction. When completed, Missouri Street will terminate in a
cul-de-sac on the south side of McCollum Science Hall. Contact Facilities
Planning 3-2611, with any questions.

SUMMER MINORITY FACULTY TEACHING PROGRAM:
Each summer the Provost Office sponsors a program
with arrangements coordinated through the Graduate College that invites
minority faculty from outside of Iowa to teach in UNI host departments.

HEALTH
BEAT UPDATE:
The East Gym Health Beat fitness area will reopen Monday, August 25
(hours M-F, 6:30am-6:30pm). Fall semester operation will be contingent
on the East Gym construction schedule. Locker and towel service will
continue to be available. Arrangements can be made through the Health
Beat fitness supervisor. Users should be advised that locker room
custodial service will be minimal and that there will be no hot water
for showers. WRS will keep you posted as plans are finalized for the
Health Beat relocation to the student union.

CONVOCATION:
August 24, GBPAC. UNI's annual Convocation will be Sunday, Aug. 24,
at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts
Center. This year's address, to be given by President Robert Koob,
is titled, "The Opportunity of a Lifetime."
Convocation, the official beginning of the academic year, will feature
a faculty procession; a P&S procession; an address by Emiliano
Lerda, student body president; and a performance by the Northern Iowa
Woodwind Quintet.

PANTHER
BASH: Mark your calendars for Sunday, Aug. 24. All
students are invited to attend the Panther Bash at 5 p.m. Free food,
prizes, and entertainment for all students following Convocation on
the grassy area across from the GBPAC. Celebrate what it means to
be a Panther. Call the Alumni Association at 3-6409 for more information.

MARS DAY CELEBRATION:
August 27 will be the first time in about 55,000 years that Mars has
been this close to the Earth. To mark this close encounter, the Department
of Earth Science will be opening up the Hillside Observatory on Jennings
Drive to the public for a chance to see the red planet through the
observatory's 16-inch telescope. Other telescopes will also be set
up to see other objects in the night sky. The open house will start
at 9 PM on Wednesday August 27. In the event of bad weather, the event
will be cancelled.
