LECTURE: "Kierkegaard on the Internet: Anonymity vs. Commitment
in the Present Age." Lecture by Hubert Dreyfus, Professor of Philosophy,
University of California at Berkeley. Thurs., Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m. in
Maucker Union Expansion. Why would Kierkegaard have hated the Internet?
Professor Dreyfus explores this question by examining Kierkegaard's
view of the 18th century press and its role in fueling an expansion
of a "public sphere" characterized by risk-free anonymity, idle curiosity,
and incipient nihilism. A noted philosopher who asserts a strong Internet
presence through is own elaborate web site, Dreyfus will provoke all
of us to reconsider our own love/hate relationships with the Internet.
Hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Religion. Questions: contact
Martie Reineke at 3-6233.
