Spring recitals will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 9:00, 10:30, 12:30, 2:00 & 3:30 and Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 1:30 & 3:00. Dear Suzuki Families,I hope you're having a great semester so far! It seems that fall is finally here, and our fall recitals are coming up soon. For those of you who are new to the program, and as a reminder for our returning students, I'd like to say a couple of words about recitals. Our Suzuki recitals are wonderful opportunities for our students to share the music they have been working on, to learn to perform in public in a low-pressure and fun environment, and to take their playing to the next level. On each recital, you will hear a great variety of music and students of varying ages and levels. In our program, we emphasize the quality of the performance, not the difficulty level, and we applaud each student's effort. Our younger students learn a great deal from listening to their peers and to the older students; our older students have a great opportunity to serve as role models for the younger performers. We specifically ask that students prepare pieces with which they are already very comfortable, not their most current piece. This is for several reasons: 1, to ensure that the performance is of the highest quality possible; 2, to give the students a comfortable, rather than stressful, experience; and 3, to use the review piece as a stepping stone for developing musicality and performance skills. The rehearsals for the recitals are called "Performance Classes" and are designed as master-class experiences. Each student has an opportunity to play through their piece several times with piano, to receive feedback and suggestions from a teacher (not necessarily their private lesson teacher), and to encourage each other in a cooperative class setting. Since the Performance Class is likely to be the only time your child has a chance to play with piano, we highly recommend listening careful and actively to the recording of the music to be performed, so that this process is as easy as possible. It is very, very helpful for the student to be extremely familiar with how the piano part sounds! Please make sure to make this a part of your practicing over the next couple of weeks. Recitals are professionally video and audio recorded, and you may obtain a copy of your child's portion of the recital -- just talk to Cathy. You are also welcome to bring your own video camera to record -- just please be considerate and set up in a location that will not block others' views of the recital. If you have any questions about the recitals or performance classes, please feel free to contact Cathy or me. I'm looking forward to hearing some beautiful music on our fall recitals! Sincerely, Julia Bullard Director 10/2009
Performance Class and Recital information Each semester we have a solo performance opportunity for all students that includes attending a Performance Class to rehearse the performance with an accompanist and performing the solo at a recital. This rehearsal takes the place of your regularly scheduled group and individual lessons for the week of November 2 through November 6, 2009 and March 22 -March 26, 2010. Being familiar with the following will help run this complicated scheduling process more smoothly. Brightly colored performance class information notes will be distributed before recital scheduling begins. Each sheet will have a label on it personalized for each student. 1. Specific information regarding each student's performance class (recital rehearsal) will be distributed about 2 weeks prior to recitals. Check the PC CLASS TIME info on the label. This is the info about your performance class or rehearsal with your accompanist. We try to schedule your Performance Class near your (or your sibling's) lesson or group time if possible. IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND YOUR PERFORMANCE CLASS AS noted above on the label, CALL CATHY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! 266-9283 or email cathy.craig@uni.edu. The earlier these conflicts are addressed the simpler they are to resolve. No changes will be made after Oct. 31 for fall recitals or March 12 for spring recitals. 2. Sign-up for a recital time on one of the recital lists with your accompanist's name. Your accompanist is listed on the label of your information sheet. Contact Cathy at cathy.craig@uni.edu to schedule your recital or see the sign-up lists on the bulletin board next to room 160. Recitals will be held at Russell Hall (rooms 111 & 116) on Saturday, November 7 and (and for spring March 27) or Sunday, November 8 and (and for spring Mar. 28). See the times listed above and below. If your accompanist has more than one recital, you may choose the most convenient time for your family. Each recital will be limited to approximately 55 minutes or 15-17 performers. Please sign-up for the recitals as soon as you receive your accompanist & performance class information. First come, first served. Some times fill up fast. NOTE: The last day to change your recital time is the Friday before performance classes begin. 3. Attend your performance class as noted on your information. If you miss your performance class, we will try to make it up during the week. We discourage students from performing if they have not attended a performance class. Let Cathy know as soon as possible if you cannot attend your class. 4. Attend the recital. Wear your nice clothes and bring treats to share at the reception we hold in the student lounge following each recital. IMPORTANT: Remember that we do NOT have group or individual lessons during the week of performance classes and recitals unless your teacher has made special arrangements with you for a make-up lesson.
NOTE: When signing up for the recital time you must pick the time that your
assigned accompanist can attend. In addition, if possible, you can choose a
recital that your teacher will attend.
If
you have a conflict and cannot sign-up at the recital time your
accompanist is available, contact Cathy. It is best if you pick a
time that your teacher is not leading a recital. Leaders are indicated
