Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra
NIYO
The Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra (NIYO) for high school students meets regularly for rehearsals. Guest Director for the upcoming season is Claudia Restrepo Guzman. The group will perform with the Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra on March 2, 2013 and a stand alone concert on March 11, 2013.
REGUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP:
Students in grades 9 - 12.
LEVEL:
This is an advanced level orchestra.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
String students will be asked to play a prepared solo, 3 octave scale, and sight read. Wind and brass students will be asked to play a prepared solo, 2 octave scale and sight read. Percussion students will be asked to play a snare drum solo, a scale on the marimba or xylophone and tune timpani. Accompanists are not required for this audition. Contact Cathy Craig at cathy.craig@uni.edu for an audition time. School orchestra or band membership is required unless circumstances require special considerations of the NIYO director. Submit details on the back of your audition form.
AUDITIONS:
NIYO audition wil be held in the fall, 2012 at Russell Hall at UNI on November 2 and 9. All new and former members of NIYO must audition. All will be notified of the results in person, by phone or by email after the auditions have been completed. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early and bring the audition form with you. First time auditionees must have their individual lesson teacher's signature. In case of no individual lesson teacher, the signature of the band or orchestra director will be accepted. Limited space is available for warm-ups prior to the audition.
Rehearsals:
- 5:30 - 7:30 in Russell Hall, Graham Hall/room 111
- Bring pencils for taking notes
- Cello & Bass students should bring rock stops.
- If you are sick, do not attend rehearsal. Please call 273-2508 and leave a message on our school voice mail before 5:00.
- Students are allowed 3 absences.
2012-2013 concert cycle: November 26; December 3, 10, & 17; January 14, 21, 28; February 4, 18, 25 eve, March 1 eve.and March 2 afternoon, and March 4 eve. Final concerts: March 2 eve and March 11 eve. Note those noted in green will be in the Gallagher Bluedorn. Rehearsal and final concert in red will be held at the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church. March 11 concert will be at 6:30. Members are requested to arrive by 5:30.
FEES & REGISTRATION:
- $100 (PER concert cycle) payable to UNI Suzuki (due at the first rehearsal of each concert cycle)

CONCERT ATTIRE for concerts:
Women: black top (3/4 or long sleeved), black pants or skirt (skirt must be below the knee or longer), black hose (black socks are fine if you are wearing pants), black dress shoes; NO sequins/glitter/shiny decorations, NO revealing or low-cut necklines
Men: black dress shirt, black suit jacket is optional, black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes; You may wear a black tie if you wish, but it is not required.
All: Please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne to the concert. Some people are sensitive to these items or allergic, and we don't want any emergencies!
If you do not own the proper concert attire and are unable to obtain it before the concert, please send contact the director.
