Welcome Back Students, Spring 2008
Welcome back to UNI for the Spring semester! A new semester is always a great time for new beginnings and getting to see everyone again! As you arrive on campus, you will find the Russell Hall Renovation moving forward at a very fast pace. Your patience last semester was greatly appreciated! You should find the environment in the practice rooms to be much improved this semester. The painting and floor trim has been added and the floors have been waxed. The airflow in the rooms has improved. For safety and security reasons, always keep the doors closed and locked. Please note that the usual entrance will be closed and you will have to enter through a Temporary Northeast Entrance for the practice rooms. It is just to the left of the entrance you used last semester (it is what used to be the back emergency exit in the back of the practice room area). We will now have water available in the practice room area for you this semester. Restrooms will still need to be accessed in the Business Building. If you have any questions or concerns during the entire semester regarding the renovation, please contact me or call Susie at 273-2025 or e-mail Susan.Grover@UNI.edu.
Many of the Russell Hall west wing faculty studios are now open. The faculty currently residing there are Dr. Grabowski (287), Dr. Korey Barrett (284), Professor Merz (191), Dr. Rachor (279), and Dr. Morgan (181). Others may be moving as the semester moves along. You should enter this wing by entering through the SW entrance (next to the mosaic) – near the road between Russell Hall and the Strayer Wood. Please do not enter any other doors. A new sidewalk has been built for your convenience and it is located between the fence and the side of the building.
Some other faculty members have changed office locations. Please check in the School of Music offices if you have questions about where a professor or staff member is located. Some are working out of multiple spaces!
Please note that the restrooms are not yet renovated in Russell Hall, except in the faculty west wing. Please use the facilities in the Curris Business Building, which is directly across the street from Russell Hall. The renovation of the entire building is still scheduled to be completed by August, 2008.
Please turn in your class/work schedule to your applied professor by Tuesday, January 15 so that lessons may be assigned. Please meet with your applied professor during the first week for assignments of music and to find out your assigned lesson time.
School of Music classes will still be located in these buildings:
· Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEE) -- corner of Campus and Jennings Drive (next to the Business Community Services building). The building is located directly across University Ave. from the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
· Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC)
· Communication Arts Center (CAC)
Please stop by the GBPAC 72 and visit with Susie, or CEE 113 to talk with Carolina, regarding any questions. You can call them at 273-2025 and 273-2024 respectively.
Undergraduate students should contact Dr. Alan Schmitz, Associate Director, with any questions about classes and graduate students should contact Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt, Associate Director. All scheduling, lockers or key requests should be made to Caroline Boehmer, Administrative Assistant - Caroline.Boehmer@UNI.edu.
Feel free to schedule a meeting with Carolina to meet with me at any time during the semester. I will have walk-in appointments during the first two days of classes in order to assist you with questions. Please stop by my office located through room CEE 113.
The School of Music is known for its excellence because of dedicated students like you! Our outstanding faculty members are ready to assist you in continuing to be a successful music major.
I wish each of you a very productive and successful semester of great music-making! See you soon!
Sincerely,
Dr. Vallentine
Director, UNI School of Music
