Meet the
Staff
Dr. Danny Galyen
Director
Dr. S.
Daniel Galyen is originally from Richmond, Virginia. He holds a B.A. in
music education from Virginia Tech, a Masters degree in music education with a wind conducting emphasis from
Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in music education
with a wind conducting concentration from the University of
Florida. From 1995-2001 he was the Director of
Bands at Northside High School in Roanoke,
Virginia. Under his leadership the band program more than doubled in size,
and both the Marching Band and Symphonic Band received consistent
Superior ratings at state and local festivals.
In the Spring of 2005, Dr. Galyen was
the recipient of the David Wilmot Award
for excellence in music education at the University of Florida. He has published
articles in The Instrumentalist, Research Perspectives in Music Education,
Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and The Music Educators
Journal. He has been a presenter at music conferences in Virginia, Florida,
Tennessee, Michigan, and Maryland. Dr. Galyen is active as a marching
band drill designer for high schools and colleges in New York,
Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. He is
aslo active as a guest conductor and clinician.
Prior to his appointment at UNI, Dr.
Galyen was Director of Bands and Instrumental
Music at Bridgewater College (VA), where he conducted the Symphonic
Band and taught courses in instrumental conducting and music education.

Dr. Galyen is a member of Pi
Kappa
Lambda Music Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society for Education, Golden Key International Honour Society, Delta
Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
He also holds memberships in The Music
Educators National
Conference, College Band Directors National Association, and
the College Music Society, and is an honorary
member of both Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity and Tau Beta
Sigma Honorary Band Sorority. At the end of June, he moved to Cedar
Falls with his wife, Kelley, and 22-month
old daughter, Kate. At UNI, Dr. Galyen will direct the
Panther Marching Band, conduct the Symphonic
Band, supervise student teachers, and teach courses in conducting and marching
band techniques. |
Carla
Venteicher
Graduate Assistant
Carla
Venteicher will be returning as our graduate assistant this year. A
2002 graduate of UNI, Carla has spent the last four years as director
of high school and fifth grade bands in the AGWSR School District in
Ackley, Iowa. While there, she was twice named to Who’s Who Among
American High School Teachers and once to the Cambridge Teaching Honors
Society. She also performed with the Hampton Municipal Band and the
North Iowa Concert Band. While at UNI, Carla was active in the Panther
Marching Band as a drum major, the Panther Pep Band, and studied
clarinet with Jack Graham.
Lindsey Brunko
Graduate Assistant
Lindsey Brunko is a second year Masters student studying Music History and Musicology. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2006 from UNI, majoring in trumpet. Lindsery served three years in the PMB, one year in the trumpet line and two years as Field Conductor. She graduated from Independence High School in 2001.
Amy
Hunzelman
Colorguard Instructor
Amy Hunzelman serves
as the Director of Education and Special Programs at the
Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC), where she is
responsible for programming and implementing a performing arts series
for children, artist residencies, masterclasses, and professional
development workshops for teachers. Amy holds a B.M. in Music
Performance and B.A. in Communications from the University of Iowa and
has over ten years of colorguard coaching experience in the state of
Iowa and Illinois. Amy also performed with Brass Theatre, (now
the broadway hit Blast!) in the mid ‘90’s traveling the U.S. with the
Canadian Brass. Amy and husband Joel reside in Waverly with their 1-year old boy/girl twins.
