2011 AUDITION INFORMATION

Band Camp for Drumline Members is August 13th-20nd, 2011

drumline1

Welcome to the 2011-2012 season for the Panther Marching Band!!! We would like to welcome our newest members to the Panther Marching Band - we are looking forward to getting to know all of you! And welcome back to returning PMB members! Combining the talent of our returning members with the new, incoming members, this year’s drumline looks to be a promising and talented one!
The primary focus of this year’s audition will be the UNI pre-game material, which is traditional to the University of Northern Iowa. With that said, this is some of the most important music that we will play all year! It is absolutely necessary that you come to camp with all of this material prepared (playable, not memorized) for the audition and camp week itself. Do not put emphasis on memorizing the music because you may not get placed on the instrument that you try out on.

You will also want to prepare the following warm-ups for use throughout camp and the marching season. If time permits, we may also ask you to perform a portion of the warm-ups during your audition, so please practice these as well!

Auditions will be held in the GBPAC in Davis Hall on the first day of band camp. Please refer to the summer newsletter for the exact starting time of auditions. Please choose one instrument (snare, tenors, bass, or cymbals) that you would like to audition on. If you would like, you may choose a secondary instrument to audition on, but it is not a requirement. Every spot on the line is open. Returning members will not automatically be guaranteed the spot they held last year.

Please download the drumline technique manual and refer to this document for any questions regarding technique used by the line. It is important that you do your best to adopt these techniques to give the line a clean, uniform look during performances. Your technique will be judged in the audition. In closing, always do you best and enjoy yourself! Music making is and will always be a fun experience in PMB!!!

We are going to have an awesome year, and we can’t wait to meet everyone!! Please feel free to contact either of us with questions or concerns about PMB!

From the Director of the Panther Marching Band

We are all very excited to have you audition for the 2011 edition of the Panther Marching Band drumline. It will be great to have so many new members to join us, and to work with all of our returning members again. Positions on the drumline are becoming increasingly competitive. Turnover in the line is very low, and most students who join the PMB as a percussionist continue to audition for the line for many years. There are two points that I wish to make about drumline auditions:

1. Do not place so much emphasis on your position/instrument in the line. Sometimes, in high school bands, instruments like cymbals and bass drums get a bad reputation because of their easy parts, or because a wind player is switched to those instruments in order to fill out the line. This is not the case here. We need outstanding musicians on every single position in the line. The idea that one position is superior to the other (i.e., that snare is better than cymbals, etc.) does not apply in college.

2. If you don't make the line, TRY AGAIN next season.

Specific details and times for auditions will be included in the summer newsletter. But I will provide a brief description of the process for your planning purposes here: On the morning of Saturday, August 13, you will check in at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Auditions will take place during the morning. At the close of auditions, you are free to eat lunch an relax with family members. The list of those who made the line will be posted after lunch (exact times included in the July newsletter). At that point - if you did not make the line then you will leave and return to campus the following weekend to move into your dorms. If you make the line you will register for PMB and move into your dorms, and start rehearsal. This process poses an inconvenient situation in that some students may decide to load and bring all of their belongings, only to not make the line and be sent home. For this reason, we strongly suggest that you only bring what you will need for the week, and have family or friends return the following Saturday to move in the remainder of your belongings.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions that you might have about this process.

We are very excited to have you audition for a position on the line!!
