Korey Barrett, vocal coach at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music, is a talented and diversely experienced musician and music educator.  His expansive background includes training as a vocal coach, accompanist, pedagogue and singer; most recently he performed in recital and presented masterclasses with John Hines, bass-baritone, at the Herzen Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia.  He has also served as coach and pianist for the last three seaons of the Des Moines Metro Opera’s James M. Collier Apprentice Program, and on mainstage productions of Un ballo in maschera, Regina, Carmen, Otello, The Rake’s Progress, and The Magic Flute.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Northern Iowa, Barrett served as Vocal Coach at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Music from 2006-2007, coaching productions of Giulio Cesare and Die Zauberflöte. He recently was Resident Artist coach and accompanist at the Minnesota Opera, where he coached the area’s leading operatic talents in concert, recital, and in productions including Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Maria Padilla, Orazi e Curiazi, Don Giovanni, Joseph Merrick dit Elephant Man, Nixon in China, Carmen, Il Signor Bruschino and Der Kaiser von Atlantis. Additional vocal coaching and performance experience includes work with Opera North and the Ohio Light Opera, as well as projects with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, New Breath Productions and Grinnell Productions, in repertoire including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Countess Maritza, The Land of Smiles, My Fair Lady, The Pirates of Penzance, Rose Marie, The Grand Duke, and The Brigands. He also served as adjunct professor of voice at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. 

Barrett earned his Doctoral degree in piano accompanying and chamber music with a minor in vocal coaching from the highly acclaimed Eastman School of Music in 2005.  He earned both his Master’s degree and his Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 2001 and 1998, respectively.
