Korey Barrett, Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching and Collaborative Piano, is a talented and diversely experienced musician and music educator. His expansive background includes training as a vocal coach, accompanist, pedagogue and singer.
Barrett most recently served as Assistant Professor/Vocal Coach at the University of Oklahoma's School of Music. Prior to that appointment we was resident artist coach and pianist at the Minnesota Opera, where he coached the area's leading operatic talents. Additional vocal coaching and performance experience includes seasons with the Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera North and the Ohio Light Opera, as well as projects with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, New Breath Productions and Grinnell Productions. He also served as adjunct professor of voice at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Versed in a wide repertoire, Barrett's recent projects include: The Rake's Progress, Die Zauberflote, Tosca, Nixon in China, Orazi e Curiazi, Joseph Merrick the Elephant Man, Don Giovanni, Madame Butterfly, Il Signor Bruschino, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Maria Padilla, Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Carmen, Bastien und Bastienne, Il Turco in Italia, Otello, Giulio Cesare. He has performed in master classes for Colin Graham, Marilyn Horne, Dawn Upshaw, Shirley Verrett, Philip Gossett, Paul Sperry, Mira Zakai and others, and continues to collaborate in recitals and masterclasses with both singers and instrumentalists throughout the country. Barrett earned his Doctoral degree in piano accompanying and chamber music from the highly acclaimed Eastman School of Music. His primary teacher there was Jean Barr, a pioneer in the field of collaborative piano. He earned both his Master's degree and Bachelor's degree in vocal performance from the University of Northern Iowa, where he studied with Jean McDonald.
