Brad T. Barrett, Assistant Professor of Choral Studies at the University of Northern Iowa , conducts the UNI Singers, Chamber Singers, and the Varsity Men's Glee Club. In addition, he co-sponsors the thirty-member UNI Student ACDA Chapter. Barrett holds a bachelor's degree in vocal music and a master's degree in choral conducting from Southwest Missouri State University , with a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting and vocal performance from The University of Arizona.
Prior to his coming to the University of Northern Iowa , Barrett attended the University of Arizona where he conducted the Symphonic Choir, the university's premiere undergraduate mixed ensemble. In addition, Barrett taught choral music in the public schools for sixteen years. As a high school director, his students were selected to perform at the state and national levels as well as performing concert tours throughout Europe . In addition, his high school students consistently held record numbers of I ratings held at district and state music festivals During his conducting tenure, his choirs have performed in such venues as Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, Saint Chappelle, Westminster Abbey and St. Giles Cathedral, Ruthin Castle, Christ's Church Dublin, St. Asaph's Cathedral, Sheldonian Theatre, and St. Paul's Covent Garden. As a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, his private students were consistently named state and regional finalists. In addition, the University of Northern Iowa Chamber Singers , under his direction, auditioned and were selected to appear on the 2007 National Convention of the American Choral Director's Association. He has studied conducting under Guy B. Webb, Alfred Skoog, Maurice Skones, and Bruce Chamberlain.
Barrett often serves as a clinician, adjudicator, and director for festivals and competitions throughout the United States , Canada , and Europe . In addition to his duties at UNI, he directs two Cedar Rapids-based civic mixed vocal ensembles, Chorale Midwest and the Chorale Midwest Chamber Singers. Dr. Barrett recently fulfilled his duties as the Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for Youth and Student Activities for the North Central Division of the American Choral Director's Association and is presently serving as the Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for Colleges and Universities for the same organization. In addition he is an active member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Music Educators National Conference, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa.
