2012 Iowa Flute Festival
The University of Northern Iowa School of Music will host the 2012 Iowa Flute Festival (IFF) on Saturday, March 24, 2012. This year's theme celebrates "A Legacy of Artistry!" World-renowned flutists William Bennett and Denis Bouriakov will be featured in Master Classes and in Concert, along with a fun-filled day of flutes and fluting from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Additional events include a morning warm-up, Flute Choir Reading Sessions, Flute Wonders Solo Competition, Round Table “Flute Chat,” Iowa Flutists in Concert, exhibits and more.

William Bennett: One of the foremost musical artists performing today, William Bennett is distinguished by his unique tone, wide range of colors, and consummate musicianship. His flute playing has inspired generations of musicians and continues to expand the boundaries of modern flute playing. He has held principal positions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and currently the English Chamber Orchestra. A prominent solo and chamber artist, he has also performed and recorded a wide range of repertoire in all genres and periods. He is known as a particularly gifted and inspiring teacher whom attracts students worldwide. Well-loved in England, he received the Offer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) from Queen Elizabeth in 1995. Most recently, William Bennett was awarded the National Flute Association's "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2002.
Denis Bouriakov: Although still in his twenties, Denis Bouriakov has developed one of the fastest growing careers amongst the musicians of his generation. Currently, he holds the highly coveted position of Principal Flute with the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He has won numerous prizes in prestigious international competitions including Kobe (2001), Nielsen (2002), Munich ARD (2004), Jean-Pierre Rampal (2005), Nicolet (2006) and Larrieu Competitions (2007). Born in Crimea (now Ukraine), Denis has performed in Russia’s premier concert halls since the age of 11. In 2000, he left Russia to study with professor William Bennett (OBE) at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Because of his distinguished academic career, he was awarded the “Principal’s Award” and the “Fellowship Award” along with a title of Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Shortly after, he won his first orchestra job in Finland, and in 2008, he became Principal Flute in the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra before joining the Metropolitan Opera in the same year.

Festival Gala Concert
World-renowned flutists, William Bennett and Denis Bouriakov with award winning UNI pianist, Sean Botkin will perform in concert at 4:45 PM during the 2012 Iowa Flute Festival. Concert repertoire include C.P.E. Bach’s Sonata in E major for Two Flutes, Demersseman’s Fantaisie “Oberon,” Saint-Säens, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Mel Bonis’ Sonata, Villa-Lobos’ Jet Whistle, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and more.
